Job Description: My client is a niche environmental consulting firm specializing in environmental impact assessments, project permitting and management, regulatory engagement and approvals, indigenous stakeholder engagement and regulatory compliance & oversight. Their primary focus is on the mining and mineral exploration sector, and they lead permitting and regulatory affairs matters for dozens of projects. They are looking for a Water Resource Engineer / Hydrotechnical Team Lead.This position is 100% remote, with a competitive benefits and remuneration package, including group RRSP options. - Lead hydrological modeling, water management plans, and conceptual engineering design projects.
- Oversee surface water components of resource projects, including baseline studies, effects assessments, water management plans, and monitoring reports.
- Manage projects, develop proposals, work plans, and cost estimates.
- Collaborate with the Practice Lead on team management and business planning.
- Design and lead surface water monitoring programs, including field execution and subcontractor oversight.
- Write high-quality technical reports for regulatory and permit management.
- Develop client relationships and contribute to business development.
- Prepare and present project results to clients and stakeholders.
- Work with multi-disciplinary teams, including modellers, water scientists, geochemists, and data experts.
- Collaborate with other practice areas.
- Deliver multiple projects within scope, budget, and schedule, ensuring high-quality standards.
- Stay updated on Canadian water quality guidelines and impact assessment legislation.
Requirements:
- Minimum 10 years of relevant experience, preferably in consulting or the natural resources sector.
- Registered Professional (P.Eng, P.Geo) or eligible for designation within six months.
- Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD in engineering or geoscience (e.g., hydrology, hydrogeology).
- Expertise in water resources engineering, water management, hydrometeorology, water balance, hydraulic modeling, and understanding of water quality/aquatic sciences.
- Strong technical knowledge in water resources/hydrotechnical engineering.
- Proficiency in hydrological modeling platforms (GoldSim experience is a plus).
- Excellent technical writing and report review skills.
- Strong knowledge of mining, environmental effects, and regulatory requirements in the natural resources sector.
- Proven project management and client relationship-building skills.
- Ability to mentor junior and intermediate staff.
- Understanding of federal/provincial guidelines and regulatory requirements (e.g., BC ENV, CCME).
- Experience in designing and leading field programs and managing large datasets.
- Strong time management and resource allocation skills.
- Experience communicating technical study results with stakeholders, First Nations, and regulators.
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and critical thinking skills.
- Willingness to travel and work in the field as needed.
Desirable Qualifications (considered a strong asset):
- Experience in the mining/resource sector.
- Fieldwork experience.
- Proficiency with hydrological and hydraulic modeling tools.
- Experience with GIS software.
- Programming skills (R, Python, C, VBA) for water resources projects.
- Familiarity with machine learning and AI.
- Experience in natural resource projects (e.g., oil and gas, renewable energy).
- Knowledge of Canadian/provincial environmental impact assessment laws (e.g., CEAA 2012) related to water quality
