We provide support that looks at the whole person, not just their mental health needs, but consider their physical, emotional, social, and spiritual wellbeing.Job Profile:Lions Housing Centres Inc. is recruiting for casual Tenant Companion positions within the Supportive Housing department. This position is responsible and accountable for promoting tenant independence. To assist tenant with activities of daily living, promoting dignity and self-esteem. To observe and report any changes in cognitive or health status. To participate in leisure time and activity programs. Tenant Companions report directly to the Director of Resident Services.Job Responsibilities:

  • Actively participates in the Quality Management Program of the facility. Functions within the Mission and Program Values.
  • Promotes independence, self-confidence, and protection of dignity by encouraging tenants to perform their own activities of daily living, assisting only as the need is demonstrated or requested. Participates in the planning and implementing of leisure activities.
  • Provides tenant with orientation and reminders regarding daily routines and activities, and appointments.
  • Provides cueing and assistance as required with elimination and provides reminders and cues to assist tenant in self-management of incontinence.
  • Assist the tenant to tidy, dust, and make up their bedroom suite, encouraging the tenant to do as much as possible thus maintaining their independence and self-esteem. Ensure the room is left in a neat and comfortable position involving the tenant in decision-making.
  • Provides general supervision, guidance and direction observing, documenting, and reporting any changes in cognitive functioning and/or health status to the Director of Resident Services. Keeps families and/or significant others informed of tenant activities and status.
  • Provides medication reminders from pre-measured, pre-packaged medication and assists with non-prescription medication as required or instructed by the Director of Resident Services.
  • Encourages tenant to assist in the preparation of meals and snacks. Supervises the dining room, promoting a relaxed, unhurried and enjoyable dining experience.
  • Cleaning and tidies after meals and snacks encourage tenants to participate, therefore helping them to feel wanted and needed.
  • Sanitizes the bathroom.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Your education and qualifications:

  • Grade 12 or equivalent
  • 1 year experience working with the senior, dementia care or as an Uncertified Health Care Aide.
  • Good verbal and written English communication skills.
  • Able to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to flex and adapt to changes and/or situations based on meeting tenant needs and facility operations.
  • Ability to recognize, document, and report changes in a tenant’s ability to function day-to-day including cognitive and/or physical changes.
  • Ability to promote and practice safe work habits to reduce the potential for injury of self and/or others.
  • Assumes personal responsibility for maintaining and enhancing current skills and knowledge regarding dementia care.
  • Good organizational abilities, with a particular emphasis on time management
  • Good interpersonal skills and an expressed willingness to work as a member of an interdisciplinary team.

This position requires a current satisfactory Criminal Records Check (including Vulnerable Sector Search), Child Abuse Registry Check and Adult Abuse Registry Check as conditions of employment.
