Reporting to the Principal, St.Amant School and consistent with the Mission, Values and policies of St.Amant, the Teacher is a critical role in ensuring the success of St.Amant business and operations.Exemplifying the mission, vision and values of St.Amant, the Teacher works collaboratively with partnered programs while offering employees respectful customer service.​Teachers are responsible for developing, implementing and evaluating individualized educational programs for small groups of students within the St.Amant School, in accordance with provincial legislation and consistent with the mission, philosophy and regulations of St.Amant.St.Amant School serves school-age persons who reside at River Road Place as well as individuals who live in the community. The program offered is one component of an integrated service model in which all St.Amant resources are seamlessly coordinated and integrated to achieve shared objectives.The primary responsibility of the Teacher is to plan and implement student educational goals through collaboration with family, coordinators, clinicians and other members of the student-centred interdisciplinary team. Teachers pursue educational goals through a combination of means including individual and small group teaching and through the supervision and direction of Instructional Assistants and Volunteers.The Teacher ensures that the student’s educational programs:

  • Provides individualized supports and opportunities to maximize development and learning
  • Optimizes student dignity, self-determination and personal independence
  • Reflects normal educational, environmental and lifestyle features and practices except when contra-indicated
  • Incorporates needed health care and therapy supports
  • Considers issues of age-appropriateness and school to post-school transitioning

Student educational goals are determined and achieved within the context, and as a part of life-goals established through the IP Process by the interdisciplinary team. The Teacher is responsible for assigned instructional assistants and volunteers and ensures that the services provided by these personnel are effectively integrated into the student’s individual plan.St.Amant, as part of an initiative entitled “Meaningful Connections”, seeks to expand the culture of support (“excellent caretaking”) to include an intentional focus on equipping a person with the opportunities and skills to develop relationships. The goal of this initiative is to have people we support exploring and establishing relationships with people in the community.QualificationsEducational:

  • An undergraduate degree in education
  • Certified as a teacher by the Manitoba Department of Education and Training
  • Formal training in special education is an asset

​Professional:

  • Previous experience teaching students with developmental/intellectual disabilities, as a special education teacher, resource teacher or regular classroom teacher
  • Previous experience in an interdisciplinary school environment
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively within a participatory team approach
  • Current knowledge concerning theory and practice relevant to the education of persons with developmental/intellectual disabilities
  • Knowledge of the history of education and support services for people with disabilities and current trends, philosophies and practices concerning their care, education and lifestyles
  • Understanding of or support for the application of interdisciplinary teamwork practices within the field of education
  • Excellent written and verbal skills

Program/Service SupportConsistent with the Mission, Philosophy and Policies of St.Amant, the Teacher is responsible for managing student educational programs ensuring adherence to policies of St.Amant, the requirements of the Department of Education and Literacy and any other external regulatory or accrediting bodies. Priority is given to providing education services which are individualized to the needs of each student, developed by each student’s full interdisciplinary team and implemented as one component of an overall integrated plan of care and education. Quality services are evident when professional communication, timeliness, accuracy, ethical awareness / sensitivity, confidentiality are consistently demonstrated as required by legislation and program/service standards.Duties include:

  • Identifies and matches staff and people supported to help them explore relationships and community activities (This is known as an “exploring pair”)
  • Maintains and reviews records related to Personal Outcome Measures for people we support, assessing where engagement could be enhanced
  • Provides feedback to employees in their roles in an exploring pair, and in supporting Personal Outcome Measures
  • Identifies with other interdisciplinary team members, total needs of a group (classroom) of students, takes specific responsibility for identifying educational needs
  • Works with others to develop and implement an “integrated service model” that will meet the global needs of assigned students, takes specific responsibility for the delivery of the educational component of the overall program of care and education
  • Participates in a formal IP (Individualized Plan) process at least annually to ensure that the overall needs and preferences of each student are addressed and that educational plans and consequent outcomes are documented
  • Provides direction and supervision to Instructional Assistants to ensure services provided are individualized, developmentally and age appropriate and reflect state-of-the-art educational practices
  • Assists with planning and implementing processes that allow the healthcare needs and educational/developmental needs of students to blend their functions so as to create a “seamless” system between the living unit and school
  • Works closely with Resident Care Coordinators, clinicians and other team members to ensure coordination and integration of services
  • Develops linkages and communication with students’ family members or advocates
  • Supports others to function as effective team members and to achieve consensus decisions
  • Incorporates outcome evaluation within the delivery of all services
  • Collaborates with community members and other school divisions as needed to ensure that the educational needs of non-resident students are met
