(employee will be working with or have access to children or vulnerable adults and requires a Criminal Record Check)Required for Professional RegistrationJob DescriptionIn accordance with the Vision, Purpose, and Values, and strategic direction of the Vancouver Island Health Authority (Island Health), patient and staff safety is a priority and a responsibility shared by everyone; as such, the requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position.Reporting to the Manager or designate and in the context of assigned team(s) with a family centered philosophy, the Speech Language Pathologist is responsible for the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of a child’s communication in order to promote the social, physical, and psychological well being of the child. The Speech Language Pathologist provides intervention using additional procedures and techniques gained through a combination of postgraduate education and experience. Provides educational services in the form of training/information sharing, role modeling and consultation to advance best practices within target program environment. Consults with selected clients with communication and swallowing disorders referred to the Program, their caregivers and Program staff on clinical issues such as needs for short-term, time-limited therapy treatment, community transition support, consultation and/or education for client and caregiver.QUALIFICATIONS:Education, Training And ExperienceCurrent licensure in a practicing category with the College of Health and Care Professionals of BC as a Speech Language Practitioner. Master’s degree from an accredited school of Speech Pathology and Audiology. Advanced Competency Certificate in Videofluoroscopic Assessment of Paediatric Swallowing Disorders from the CSHHPBC. Two years previous experience working with children who have multiple disabilities and communication disorders.Skills And Abilities

  • Ability to independently organize and plan treatment programs, set priorities, and to work with parents and other professional disciplines as part of a team.
  • Ability to conduct and interpret Videofluoroscopic Assessments of Paediatric Swallowing Disorders.
  • Ability to train and monitor others to deliver SLP programs.
  • Ability to be perceptive to the needs of children and families and able to act accordingly with tact, patience, and optimism.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in written and oral English.
  • Ability to interact effectively with children with disabilities, families, fellow employees, and the general public.
  • Ability to use initiative and exercise good professional judgment.
  • Knowledge of group processes and ability to apply facilitation techniques.
  • Ability to operate related equipment.
  • Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.
  • Functional use of alternate modes of communication an asset.
