Job Description: As a member of the Substance Use & Concurrent Disorders team you will use best practices to provide person centred Social Work services to clients with substance use disorders and co-occurring mental health and physical health problems and their families. This includes assessment, crisis management, therapeutic intervention, group therapy and discharge planning, in collaboration with the clinical team, client, and families, and hospital and community partners. This position specifically requires expertise in harm reduction interventions, evidence-informed psychological treatment approaches (i.e., motivational interviewing, cognitive behavioural therapy, dialectical behaviour therapy), and care planning with community and hospital partners.Duties:

  • Work collaboratively, cooperatively and effectively within the SUCD Program and with hospital and community partners, including acute care hospitals, public health, AccessMHA, Ottawa Withdrawal Management Centre, and other stabilization, outpatient, and bed-based treatment programs
  • Provide evidence based social work biopsychosocial assessment, consultation and treatment (individual, groups, couples, and family) for clients with severe and complex concurrent substance use, mental health and physical health disorders
  • Advocate on behalf of clients, families and caregivers for appropriate services and resources
  • Complete rapid risk assessment and crisis intervention plans, and respond constructively and effectively to crisis situations (i.e., suicidal behavior, alcohol/opioid intoxication)
  • Engage client, family and community supports in clinical interventions and risk reduction strategies with the interdisciplinary team, to ensure the continuum of care, and facilitate follow up in the community
  • Assess clients’ social determinants of health and assist as appropriate (e.g., housing, transportation, medication coverage)
  • Uses a broad range of evidence-informed therapeutic approaches (i.e., motivational interviewing, cognitive behavioural therapy, dialectical behaviour therapy) within a trauma-informed care and harm reduction framework appropriate to the needs of individuals struggling with concurrent disorders
  • Lead multiple concurrent disorder group-based therapy modules, which employ motivational interviewing, cognitive behavioural therapy, and dialectical behaviour therapy modalities
  • Document on patient’s clinical record according to hospital, college, and legislative standards
  • Demonstrate thorough knowledge of the theories and practices of a professional social worker
  • Maintain workload measurement and data collection as required
  • Participate in the teaching, education and supervision of Social Work students
  • Complete and maintain all requirements for registration with OCSWSSW.
  • Attend Social Work clinical peer consultation, and participate in peer consultation processes
  • Attend Social Work meetings and participate in discipline specific activities
  • Keep current of hospital policies and procedures and applicable legislation
  • Keep up to date regarding professional standards by reviewing current literature, attending education events, networking with colleagues, etc.
  • Provide educational presentations to community groups and conferences (travel required)
  • Flexibility in work schedule; day and evening hours as required
  • Liaise, consult and work collaboratively with community service providers
  • Work in a manner that is in compliance with staff and patient/client safety practices, policies and procedures of The Royal.

Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Social Work is required
  • Registration and in good standing with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers
  • Must have experience as a clinical social worker in a mental health and substance use treatment setting.
  • Training and experience with individuals with severe and complex substance use and concurrent mental health disorders is mandatory
  • Training and experience in individual, family, and group work is mandatory
  • Training and experience working with individuals with opioid use disorders, alcohol use disorders, and other substance use disorders is mandatory
  • Training and experience with motivational interviewing, DBT and CBT is preferred.
  • Demonstrated presentation, training and group facilitation skills
  • Effective teamwork skills
  • Knowledge and experience with harm reduction interventions, including safer injection practices and overdose prevention and response, is required. Knowledge and experience working with public health and related community agencies
  • Knowledge and experience working with individuals with high risk drug use and blood borne infections and STIs
  • Experience identifying the signs and symptoms of alcohol withdrawal or intoxication, and opioid withdrawal or intoxication is required.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in inter-disciplinary teams, collaboratively within hospitals and the community
  • High level of knowledge, skill and confidence in using electronic health record systems for clinical documentation and navigation.
  • Willingness to work variable hours, evenings and weekends
  • Travel may be required
  • English level A- is mandatory in oral expression/comprehension, reading comprehension and written expression. French level A- is mandatory in oral expression and oral comprehension.
