Established in 1993, Y Newcomer Connections is a leading immigrant settlement center focused on creating connections that will transform our community into a lasting, healthy home for immigrants from around the world and from all walks of life.The OpportunityAs a Settlement Worker in Schools with Y Newcomer Connections, you will partner with local schools to support the settlement of newcomer students and their families in our community. Your role will involve helping with the orientation and registration of newcomer children in K-12 in Anglophone school districts. You will actively research and make referrals to appropriate support services. Working in designated schools 2-3 days a week, you will provide practical assistance to newcomer children and their families, support Guidance Counsellors and EAL mentors, and promote a welcoming and inclusive school environment. Evening and weekend work may be required on occasion.Responsibilities

  • Orient new families to the Canadian education system and assist in school registration.
  • Organize and support school orientation sessions and activities.
  • Provide in-school support for newcomer students, including mentoring and cultural competency training.
  • Facilitate parent involvement and advocate for newcomer students.
  • Collaborate with school staff to support students with disabilities, behavioral issues, and other barriers.
  • Assist in post-secondary education planning.
  • Coordinate back-to-school sessions and assist with school supply purchases.
  • Organize summer employment information sessions and make referrals to support services.
  • Manage applications for daycare, afterschool programs, and summer camps.
  • Assist in planning and coordinating YMCA summer day camps.
  • Build and maintain relationships with school district representatives.
  • Manage client caseloads, ensuring regular check-ins and integration support.
  • Initiate and manage integration programs and workshops.
  • Apply for funding assistance for community program participation.
  • Address unique student challenges and maintain accurate client records.
  • Report client activities on the iCARE database and submit regular reports to supervisors.

Skills and Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s Degree, Community College diploma or similar from an accredited institution
  • Approachable and possessing a strong client-centric attitude
  • Heightened sensitivity to the needs of our immigrant community
  • A minimum of 3 years work experience in a cross-cultural environment
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills
  • Outstanding organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Computer literate (MS Word & Excel)
  • Ability to work flexible hours
  • Must be fluent in the English language; Ability to speak Arabic will be considered an asset.
  • Knowledge of NB schools & the school system and policies
  • Employment is contingent on having a clean Criminal Record Check.
