Campus: University of Toronto Scarborough (UTSC)Description:Course number and title: EES1117H – Climate Change Impact Assessment – Winter 2025Course description: Although climate change is a global phenomenon, the varying impacts of climate change are experienced at regional scales. Because many long-term planning decisions – decisions that often rely on climate information – are made locally, we are entering an era when the availability of future projections of regional climate information at appropriate spatial scales and in accessible forms is critical. Thus, this course describes how climate information can and is being used to assess the impacts of climate change and, ultimately, inform local decision-making and adaptation strategies. The course begins by reviewing global climate change over the last 150 years and the projections of future climate change using Global Climate Models (GCMs)/Earth System Models (ESMs). The climate change impact assessment (CCIA) framework is then introduced and applied to several case studies. Downscaling of GCM/ESM data is a key component of CCIA; both statistical and dynamical downscaling techniques will be discussed in classEstimated course enrolment: 30Number of Hours: 0.5 FTESessional dates of appointment: Specific duties will occur between January 1, 2025 and April 30, 2025.Salary: Starting September 1, 2023 the following rates of pay apply for half courses (F or S), inclusive of vacation pay: $9457.89 for a Sessional Lecturer I; $9,930.79 for a Sessional Lecturer I Long Term; $10,151.76 for a Sessional Lecturer II; $10,326.61 for an Sessional Lecturer II Long Term; 10,362.76 Sessional Lecturer III; and $10,570.02 for a Sessional Lecturer III Long Term.Minimum qualifications:Preferred qualifications:

  • PhD (or in progress) in physics, climatology, atmospheric science or closely related discipline
  • Experience with approaches in and application of climate change impact assessment
  • Understanding of Global Climate Models
  • Evidence of expertise in both statistical and dynamical downscaling of climate projections
  • Expertise in Python coding and programming are required.
  • Prior university teaching experience is an asset, but not required
