We are currently hiring a Senior Employee Relations Consultant with thorough understanding of employee and labour relations practices and principles including the collective bargaining processWhat you will doReporting to the Manager of Employee Relations, you will be responsible for supporting the preparation and execution of collective bargaining, providing employee relations guidance on capital projects, and managing complex cases and projects.For capital projects, you will identify the needs for labour relations expertise across high-level initiatives and hold a pro-active role in the organization; provide ongoing strategic and confidential advice, support, and information to management including Chiefs and Managers on complex and high-level employee and labour relations matters to ensure the TTC’s compliance with legislation, policy, and collective agreements; and identify issues requiring attention and provision of strategic proposals to address such matters.You will act as lead labour relations negotiator for various projects of corporate importance; oversee and resolve complex grievances, mediations and arbitrations relating to capital projects and complex cases; update the Executive Director of People & Culture and other stakeholders on the high profile arbitrations on a regular basis; identify, develop and implement dispute resolution strategies in response to grievances, mediations, arbitrations and issues that arise from unions representing hourly-rated employees; investigate and prepare necessary information and/or participates in Step 3 grievance appeal meetings; develop, interpret, and administer Memorandums of Settlement resulting from grievance proceedings, mediations, arbitrations and wrongful dismissal actions; and negotiate arbitration settlements with leeway to act within the scope of authorized financial authority.You will also prepare documentation for signature as required by the CEO, DCEO, Chief People & Culture Officer, Executive Director of People & Culture, and Director of Employee Relations on a variety of employee and labour relations matters; interpret, evaluate and advise management on grievance arbitration awards and Ontario Labour Relations Board decisions; minimize the risk, time and costs associated with employment and labour litigation and consult with and provide information and assistance to the TTC’s legal counsel (internal and external); prepare materials and develop strategy with legal counsel and acts as the TTC representative and advisor in the presentation of cases.For collective bargaining, you will support all steps leading up to negotiations including but not limited to researching economic and bargaining trends, consulting stakeholders to ascertain and understand business goals to pursue in negotiations, participating and/or facilitating intra-organizational discussion to develop the mandate and negotiations strategy, and developing various documents related to collective bargaining. During collective bargaining, you will be required to directly participate in negotiations as a collective bargaining team member for all or some of the negotiations with the TTC’s various unions. As a team member, your responsibilities may include attending and participating in bargaining meetings, taking minutes, preparing bargaining proposal documents and agreements, and more.In addition to the above, you will be responsible for treating passengers and/or employees with respect and dignity and ensuring the needs of passengers or employees with disabilities are accommodated and/or addressed (within their area of responsibility) in accordance with the Ontario Human Rights Code and Related Orders so that they can fully benefit from the TTC as a service provider and an employer and perform related duties as assigned.What Qualifications Do You Bring

  • Completion of a post-secondary education in Industrial Relations, or related field, combined with 5-7 years of directly related work experience in a union environment.
  • Thorough understanding of employee and labour relations practices and principles including the collective bargaining process
  • Familiarity with and ability to interpret Collective Agreements
  • Ability to interpret and apply the Ontario Labour Relations Act, Ontario Human Rights Code, Employment Standards Act, Occupational Health & Safety Act, and other legislation and related jurisprudence
  • Strong negotiation, mediation and conciliation skills
  • Extensive experience consulting in an industrialized unionized environment applying a variety of labour relations principles
  • Demonstrated experience in dealing with complex jurisdictional and scope related grievances
  • Well-developed analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Proficiency in the use of a personal computer and related software applications relevant to the work (i.e. Word, Excel, etc.)
  • Sound judgement; well-developed investigative, organizational, interpersonal, time management, oral and written communication skills
  • An LL.B. designation, Masters of Industrial Relations or experience in labour and employment law are definite assets
  • Must have or must acquire a sound knowledge of TTC and departmental policies, procedures, practices and Collective Agreements applicable to the work performed;
  • Must be willing to receive further education in related courses and seminars as required
  • Must keep current on changes to legislation and government policy relating to labour and employment issues.
  • Must have or rapidly acquire a comprehensive knowledge of the Ontario Human Rights Code and Related Orders including disability accommodation and accessibility requirements pertaining to passengers and employ
