Job Description: Senior Business Partner – Investment ServicesAlberta Innovates is seeking a Senior Business Partner, Investment Services who will provide investment and market intelligence support for Alberta Innovates (AI) programs. This includes business due diligence for investments into AI-aligned technology companies across stages and sectors, and providing analyses to inform evidence-based operational, capital and investment decisions. The Senior Business Partner provides advice, builds stakeholder relationships and ensures activities are compliant with corporate policies and applicable regulatory requirements.This role will be based either in Edmonton or Calgary and will require travel between 10-25% of the time.Are you our next Senior Business Partner, Investment Services?   • Have the ability to multitask between assessments, work under tight deadlines, with a passion for accuracy and quality
  • Comfortable with new and emerging technologies and (or) markets
  • Have the ability to manage stakeholder relationships and generate respect and trust from a diverse group of stakeholders
  • Have exceptional verbal, written, listening and interpersonal skills to convey information and concepts
  • Have a persistent ability to seek out illegal or fraudulent activities with very little information in a timely manner

Here’s some more information about the position:Job DetailsResponsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Conducts due diligence on potential investments, assessing factors such as market potential, technology differentiation, management team, competitive landscape, and financial viability across a spectrum of early to late-stage opportunities (includes analyzing business plans, financial statements, proforma and contractual obligations; and conducting primary and secondary market and technology landscape research) to provide funding recommendations to the investment committee.
  • Generates insights for key analytical decisions; develops and improves tools, system and processes; develops and maintains relationships with internal stakeholders, peers and colleagues to understand program priorities to manage new requests, processes and delivery expectations; remains current on industry best practices and emerging trends in line with Alberta Innovates program initiatives.
  • Liaises with internal and external stakeholders including working collaboratively with AI’s client-facing Technology Development Advisors and Program Managers to bring value to clients; develops and maintains networks outside of AI including with other small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) funders to ensure strong due diligence; and maintains confidentiality of client information.

Qualifications / Experience we are looking for:

  • Bachelor’s degree in commerce, business administration, economics, science or engineering; preference will be given to those with MBA or CPA designation
  • Minimum 8 years in management consulting, private equity or venture capital, commercial/investment banking or working with (or for) a technology based small to medium enterprise (SME)
  • Demonstrated business sense in a diversified set of industries.
  • Experience with SMEs in the technology commercialization space.
  • Knowledge of emerging technologies and their applications.
  • Knowledge of financial frauds in businesses
  • Preference will also be given to those with exposure to mergers and acquisitions in a consulting, corporate development, financial planning and analysis, venture capital, or private equity environment, and those with financial / accounting experience.
