It’s your support, expertise, and guidance that helps people ignite their full potential and shape our neighborhoods into vibrant and healthy communities.About the program and opportunity:Based in Cumberland County, Nova Scotia, this position will work very closely with YREACH Settlement staff in Amherst, Oxford and local YREACH language team, as well as community organizations. This position work on site in, and with, schools to provide practical settlement and integration supports to newcomer children, youth and their families as they settle into the school system and community. We are looking for someone with initiative, is a great relationship builder, passionate about working with families and making a difference!In this role, you will:

  • Providing individual and group settlement support in schools
  • Building effective professional relationships with all stakeholders
  • Engaging schools through awareness raising, meetings and building connections
  • Facilitating problem solving using solution focused approaches
  • Supporting clients to access supports and opportunities within the school system
  • Identifying and supporting opportunities to engage newcomer contributions
  • Providing referrals to community resources
  • Timely completion and submission of required reports and other documentation as required by the coordinator and/ or School Settlement program

Education and skills qualifications:

  • Combination of education and experience working in community setting
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks, meeting deadlines
  • Understanding of, and experience with, the Nova Scotia school system – policies, procedures, expectations etc.
  • Demonstrated discretion and sound judgement in the handling of confidential information
  • Excellent data management skills and Microsoft 365 skills
  • Experience working with and providing service to diverse populations
  • High level of initiative is needed to work independently and respond to unanticipated situations
  • Experience delivering presentations and workshops
  • Multilingual is an asset
  • Experience working with children providing creative group activities & programs
  • Knowledge of and sensitivity to the settlement process for newcomer families

Conditions of employment:

  • Clear Child Abuse Register Check
  • Current and satisfactory Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Check (must be dated less than 6 months from hire date)
  • Completion of YMCA’s Child Safety & Protection Orientation within first week of employment
  • Completion of YMCA Child Safeguarding Training within probationary period
  • Valid First Aid and CPR certificate if required for the role
