Salary: $74,428 – 93,035 per annum (to commensurate with experience and consistent with UHN Compensation Policy)
Hours: 37.5 Hours per Week

Closing Date: October 15, 2024Job SummaryAs an integral member of the UHN Safety Services Department, part of the Research Safety Team, the primary responsibilities of the Safety Officer are to support research laboratories to work safely and incompliance with relevant legislation. The position includes: performing safety duties and coordinating projects under the direction of the Manager, Research Safety, and Director, UHN Safety Services; maintaining and coordinating safety programs; assisting with the development of safety literature/departmental process, personnel support, support for incident response/investigation; providing safety training, review of projects, area inspections/audit; coordinating multiple/simultaneous small scale projects for assigned groups; performing quality management responsibilities; performing data management/communication and administrative responsibilities; performing cross-functional and other duties consistent with the job classification as assigned and/or as requested.Duties

  • Assists the Manager and Director with research safety programs including development and maintenance of safety literature, departmental process, safety project development/implementation, and accurate record keeping and data tracking.
  • Reviews biosafety permit applications and clinical studies related to manipulation of biological agents.
  • Performs laboratory inspections/audits as per regulatory requirements (Public Health Agency of Canada, Canadian Food Inspection Agency, Occupational Health & Safety Act, etc.).
  • Researches current safety literature and legislation and develops, maintains and updates training presentations and materials, subject to approval from the Manager and or Director.
  • Develops safety training materials for online modules as well as delivers safety training to both research and support personnel in large and small audiences or to individuals.
  • Conducts on-going evaluation of quality indicators to ensure the integrity and safety of projects/equipment and notify appropriate bodies of deficiencies/gaps.
  • Attends and actively participates in intra- and inter-departmental meetings, as required.

Qualifications

  • At minimum, completion of a bachelor’s degree in Sciences or recognized equivalent required.
  • At minimum over 5 years related experience including practical and theoretical experience.
  • Experience in relevant safety programs
  • Experience with Microsoft Office/365 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, MS Teams, SharePoint, etc.)
  • Knowledge of safety legislation, an asset.
  • Chemical and/or laser experience, an asset.
  • Project management skills, an asset.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
