Title of the Job: Process Engineer

Location: Mississauga, ON

Job Description: Basic FunctionReporting to the Process Engineering Team Lead, the Sr. Process Engineer will be responsible for managing and executing preliminary stages of projects, developing problem definition, developing and evaluating potential safe, reliable and cost effective solutions, including process design, cost estimation and economic analysis, and risk evaluations. The Sr Process Engineer may also be called upon to troubleshoot operational issues. The role’s primary intent is to bring excellence to frontend design work of refining sustaining capital projects.Job Duties

  • Define projects by developing problem statement, project objectives, and success criteria
  • Manage projects following a stage gated process including developing and managing project schedules and budgets, identifying resources required, presenting recommendations
  • Develop design basis, identifying and developing process design defining specifications
  • Develop preliminary cost estimates for options, and economic analysis where required
  • Provide safe, environmentally responsible, reliable, and cost effective solutions including meeting all PSM and MOC requirements
  • Conduct project process hazards analysis (project PHA)
  • Be familiar with unit operations design, including over pressure protection, piping, pump sizing design
  • Be able to effectively work with other engineering disciplines such as mechanical, civil, and structural engineers
  • Be familiar with general design best practices, applicable design standards such as API, ASME, NFPA, ANSI, OSHA, etc.
  • Evaluate, recommend and implement improvements and/or modifications to operations, equipment utilization
  • Start-up support for existing and new facilities
  • Evaluate and select technologies, technical strategies and providing technical assistance to the business
  • Act as a mentor to other engineers
  • Review vendor proposals for new equipment purchase or modification of existing processing equipment, engineering services

Special assignments or tasks assigned to the employee by their supervisor, as determined from time to time in their sole and complete discretionExperience

  • A minimum of 5-7 years of progressive work experience in the chemical engineering discipline and project management is required
  • Job Level will be determined by person’s knowledge, skills, and experience
  • Work experience in an operating plant in the oil and gas or petro-chemical industry is preferred
  • Troubleshooting experience on refinery unit operations is preferred

Education Level

  • A minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical Engineering is required
  • Licensed Professional Engineer in the Province of Ontario or eligible

Required Skills

  • Technical expert in area of specialty
  • Advanced ability to stay abreast of new technology developments and processes and apply knowledge analytically
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft software applications and commonly used engineering concepts and experience with engineering software such as process simulations
  • Familiarity with industry standards and best practices of the specific discipline
  • Ability to effectively communicate with others, both written and verbal communication
  • Advanced reading and writing skills
  • The ability to perform advanced mathematical calculations

Work ConditionsOffice and plant based with up to 20% travel by land and air required. Petroleum refinery, warehouse/plant environment, and out-of-doors environment including but not limited to chemicals, pressure vessels, tanks, rotating equipment, wet and/or oil contaminated conditions, at both below grade and elevated positions, and working in confined spaces. Subject to all temperatures, weather and varying road conditions.Physical RequirementsJob conditions require standing, walking, sitting, talking or hearing, making visual inspections, making precise hand and finger movements, lifting and/or carrying up to 50 lbs, climbing up to 400 ft, perceiving colour differences, required to wear personal protective equipment as needed and a respirator in emergency situations (beards not permitted), ability to operate and drive all assigned company vehicles at company standard insurance rates is essential, valid provincial driver’s license and proof of insurance required.
