Title of the Job: Principal, Mechanical Engineering

Job Description: Job Description:The Principal Mechanical Engineer leads a variety of assignments in ship repair, conversion refits, and facility improvement projects. This role works closely with the engineering manager and multiple departments, making it ideal for an experienced individual who enjoys balancing practical design with hands-on activities.Note: Due to business needs, this position is required to be fully on-site based at 825 Admirals Road, VictoriaWhat you’ll do

  • Technical Package Development: Review customer information and develop technical packages, including conceptual designs, 3D models, P&ID diagrams, and mechanical repair plans.
  • Project Leadership: Act as the technical authority on assigned projects, working closely with Operations, Production, Estimating, Supply Chain, HSE, and QA departments.
  • Problem-solving: Resolve technical production issues in fabrication shops and onboard vessels.
  • Design and Analysis: Perform engineering calculations and design mechanical components such as propulsion systems and HVAC.
  • Documentation: Prepare and manage engineering documents, including drawings, calculations, and reports.
  • Collaboration: Work with production managers to develop repair and conversion strategies and support other departments with technical information.
  • Provide mechanical engineering support across all projects.
  • Perform engineering calculations (statics, dynamics, mechanics of materials & fluids).
  • Design mechanical components and develop repair strategies.
  • Conduct technical investigations into component or system failures.
  • Prepare detailed designs for manufacturing hydraulic test fittings and machine elements.
  • Review rigging arrangements and prepare lifting plans.
  • Collect and process technical information for ship repair and construction projects.
  • Review and issue design and construction packages.
  • Develop repair specifications, work instructions, and inspection plans.
  • Collaborate with other departments to resolve production issues.
  • Prepare support information for other departments (e.g., P&IDs and BOMs).
  • Manage shop/construction drawings packages.
  • Participate in lessons learned throughout the project.
  • Act as the technical authority on assigned projects, ensuring technical and performance requirements are met.

What you’ll bring

  • Bachelor’s Degree or Diploma in Technology in mechanical engineering.
  • AScT, EIT, P.Tech., or P.Eng. designation in a Canadian province is an asset.
  • EGBC P.Eng. registration within one year of joining.
  • Minimum of ten years of experience in a marine or relevant engineering design office, shipyard, ship operations, or ship maintenance facility.
  • Experience with AutoCAD and controlling technical information.
  • Familiarity with Classification Society rules (e.g., LR or DNV GL) is an asset.
  • Experience in an operation or production support role is an asset.
  • Experience with a diversely integrated project team is an asset.

The estimated salary for this position is $117,000 – $143,000. In determining final salary, Seaspan considers many factors including the successful Candidate’s skillset and experience as well as position location and internal equity.
