Title of the Job: Port Captain

Location: North Vancouver, BC

Job Description: The Seaspan Marine Port Captain is accountable for the efficient operation of the marine fleet and reports to the Manager, Vessel Operations. Working in collaboration with various departments within Marine Operations and the HSEQ Departments, this position ensures operation standards and safety procedures are in place and all requirements with respect to vessel and crew safety are met. This position will require weekend flexibility with a 5 day per week schedule. This role also provides leadership in opening communication lines between the corporate office and all seagoing personnel, motivating employee performance and promoting strong team morale. Port Captains work a rotational on call schedule providing supervisory support to vessel crews and other departments.Note: Due to business needs, this position is required to be fully on-site based at 10 Pemberton in North Vancouver.What you’ll do

  • Oversees and organizes the safe and efficient operation of the assigned fleet. This includes daily problem solving, troubleshooting and complaint handling on operational issues, training, and supervision of all seagoing personnel, and overseeing and regulating crew overtime and deck ordering.
  • Provides leadership by motivating employees, conducting employee performance evaluations, and conducting ongoing training including final sign off for master’s development.
  • Builds strong team morale and facilitates communication between the corporate office and the seagoing personnel.
  • Builds safety culture and provides guidance to vessel crews on company policy and procedures.
  • Assists with vessel compliance, including regulatory and statutory inspections, and planning relevant preparedness.
  • Provides operational expertise to other departments, including emergency preparedness and Incident Command for emergency situations.
  • Organizes and supervises specialty barge and large project loading and un-loading ensuring all operational health and safety measures are in place.
  • Conducts incident investigations including property damage, personal injury, or environmental incidents to identify root cause. Follows up to ensure corrective measures implemented to prevent future incidents.
  • Promotes and ensures workplace safety through ongoing monitoring of company policies and procedures for marine vessels and crews. This includes coordinating operational and occupational safety training for marine crews, attending safety meetings, and providing regular written and verbal communications, onboard visits, and visual checks.
  • Assists in the development of company procedures and work instructions. Implements policy and procedures for vessels and marine crews.
  • Maintains vessels’ working and safety equipment making sure they are maintained at a high standard.
  • Performs additional duties as required.

What you’ll bring

  • Minimum Watchkeeping Mate Certificate.
  • Completion of Technical, Engineering or Nautical Sciences Program at a recognized secondary school institution an asset.
  • Minimum 5 Years of Shipboard or Marine Operations Management experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Navigational knowledge of the Washington and B.C. Coasts.
  • Knowledge of relevant Canadian and International Marine Regulations.
  • Knowledge of the Canada Labour Code and Occupational Safety and Health Regulations.
  • Knowledge of the marine industry on the West Coast of North America and understanding of West Coast Port and Terminal Operations.
  • Understanding of the operations of a tug and barge fleet.
  • Communication and supervisory skills.
  • Self-starter with the ability to work both alone and in a team environment.
  • Problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to handle emergency response effectively and efficiently. Able to lead and perform under high pressure.
  • Ability to develop towing and voyage plans.

The estimated salary for this position is $103,500 – $126,500. In determining final salary, Seaspan considers many factors including the successful Candidate’s skillset and experience as well as position location and internal equity.
