If so, we have a Paralegal opportunity with the Legal Services Division that could be the next career step for you!You’ll be responsible for providing a broad range of support to litigation counsel whose teams handle complex legal matters arising from high priority initiatives. This includes providing support to counsel for Alberta’s Chief Firearms Office to handle all s.74(2) Firearms Act hearings throughout the Province of Alberta.Your responsibilities as a Paralegal with the Litigation team will include the following:

  • Independently draft and file court documents at all levels of court (Provincial Court, Court of King’s Bench, Court of Appeal, Federal Court, Federal Court of Appeal, and the Supreme Court of Canada).
  • Assist in drafting and formatting Briefs/Factums and have expertise in procedural requirements for documents being prepared and filed.
  • Manage and organize files and voluminous records in preparation for complex court proceedings.
  • Identify issues on assigned files and conduct legal/topical research.
  • Maintain diarization of files to ensure timelines and limitation periods are met.
  • Comprehensive communication to facilitate the litigation process and ensure compliance with relevant legislation and policies.
  • Preparation and distribution of regular case law summaries.
  • Create and contribute to legal databases and precedents.
  • Build and maintain a precedent bank of pleadings, legal opinions, filed written arguments.
  • Any other paralegal duties as required.

  • Two-Year Diploma in a related field (Paralegal, Legal Assistant)
  • Three (3) years progressively responsible related experience; or equivalent as described.

Equivalency: Directly related experience or education considered on the basis of:

  • one year of experience for one year of education or
  • one year of education for one year of experience.

Our ideal candidate will demonstrate the following assets:

  • Experience with Civil filing procedures and legal citation.
  • Experience with Civil litigation.
  • Experience working within the Firearms Act and associated procedures.
  • Experience conducting legal research.
  • Experience working within Prolaw software.
  • Experience with a variety of administrative functions within Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint)
