Job Description: Job DescriptionOrthopaedic Technologist or TechnicianAs a member of the interdisciplinary team, the Registered Orthopaedic Technologist or Technician provides direct client centered care in support of the delivery of orthopedic services in the emergency room or fracture/plastics clinics, some inpatient and operating room is required at times.The Registered Orthopaedic Technologist/Technician has responsibilities related to surgical and non-surgical procedures and assists in the care of patients in the clinic under the direction of the orthopaedic surgeon or an emergency department physician. In addition, this role is responsible for ordering supplies, maintaining equipment and provides education related to orthopaedic treatments and follow-up care to patients and families. The Registered Orthopaedic Technologist/Technician works closely with health care team members to ensure patients have received excellent care for acute injuries, post-operative care and chronic conditions.Contribute to safe, quality care by

  • Supports and maintains the principles of shared governance, interdisciplinary and collaborative management, patient focused service, and continuous quality improvement.

  • Designs and implements methods and techniques to monitor and continuously improve the delivery of service.
  • Utilizes excellent written, verbal and presentation skills and has a working knowledge of effective communication strategies.

What must you have?

  • Orthopaedic Technologist Diploma OR
  • Orthopaedic Technician working towards Orthopaedic Technologist then Graduate of a recognized Orthopaedic Technologist Program sanctioned by the CSOT, or an apprenticeship program, or completed sponsorship by an Orthopaedic Physician in accordance with the membership guidelines of the Canadian Society of Orthopaedic Technologists.
  • Successful completion of the written, oral and practical examinations and holds current full membership with the Canadian Society of Orthopaedic Technologists (CSOT) OR
  • Orthopaedic Technician working towards Orthopaedic Technologist – current student membership with the Canadian Society of Orthopaedic Technologists (CSOT).
  • Current BCLS.
  • Minimum 2 years of related work experience in a fast paced setting working directly in the care of orthopaedic patients.

What else do you bring?

  • Organize and maintain the effective and efficient patient flow in the emergency department and fracture/plastics clinics.
  • Applies, revises and removes casts.
  • Fabricates, applies and removes splints, slabs, bandages and braces.
  • Removes staples/sutures and applies simple dressings.
  • Sets up and maintains traction equipment.
  • Assesses levels of pain and/or swelling and instructs patients appropriately in methods of reducing these levels.
  • Assists the orthopaedic surgeons in the operating room as requested.
  • Provides specific patient teaching relating to injury.
  • Provides education to patients and families regarding cast care, brace and appliance application, wound care, osteoporosis, injections, crutch use and pre-op preparation.
  • Demonstrates superior communication and interpersonal skills required with an ability to work effectively and collaborate with other health care professionals.
  • Ability to float to the emergency department, fracture/plastic clinics, inpatient unit or to assist in an operating room environment.
  • Proficient in the application of casting and orthopaedic technologies.
  • Expert knowledge and application of aseptic technique in dressing change, removal of sutures, staples, pins and external fixators, setting up surgical field for injections and minor procedures.
  • Knowledge of and experience with orthopaedic conditions/injuries and casting including related orthopaedic technologies.
  • Assists in the application, maintenance and adjustment of traction (skin, skeletal and manual). This includes patient education of traction therapy.
  • Superior communication and interpersonal skills required with an ability to work effectively and collaborate with other health care professionals and other departments.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills, including ability to explain the care of orthopaedic appliances to patient/family and other staff.
  • Demonstrated continuing education (as per registration requirement).
  • Ability to function with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to interpret fractures and dislocations on x-ray film and follow medical directions.
  • Demonstrated superior customer service skills required.
  • Energetic, highly motivated, detail oriented individual with strong work ethic.
  • Demonstrated strong organizational skills.
  • Strong attendance record.
  • Demonstrated reliability and punctuality.

  • Nursing/medical background
  • Previous experience in the Orthopaedic Technician or Orthopaedic Technologist classification
