Please proceed using the link:POSITION OVERVIEW: Startec Compression and Process is currently recruiting a Mechanical Engineer Specialist to work at our Shepard Office (9423 Shepard Rd SE, Calgary, AB, T2C 4R6).Reporting to the Package Engineering Supervisor, the Mechanical Engineering Specialist is responsible for the continuous development and maintenance of Startec’s specifications, ensuring compliance with current codes and standards across various industries, including oil and gas (ASME, API, CSA, AGA) and emerging non-renewable markets like hydrogen.This role involves creating specifications, technical bulletins and checklists to ensure that standard engineering drawings and documentation aligns with current regulations, enabling the fabrication and assembly of shop-ready skid packages. Responsibilities may also include creating mechanical data sheets, preparing RFQs, conducting technical bid evaluations, and participating in drawing reviews for projects. This role is vital to project and organizational success, with a key focus on mentoring engineers and supporting the growth of the standards department.KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS (KPI):TECHNICAL EXCELLENCE (Weighting 70%)Technical Leadership

  • Develop and maintain mechanical engineering specifications and standards, ensuring they are consistently updated and published to align with current codes, industry regulations, and emerging trends. Take accountability for the continuous improvement and relevance of these specifications. Establish clear goals and expectations, prioritize tasks, and monitor progress.
  • Develop and enhance mechanical engineering standards and processes for mechanical equipment (compressors, pumps), piping and valve line class specifications to ASME B31.3 and CSA B51, standardization of assembly drawings, technical bulletins, and checklists.
  • Develop piping system Material Selection considering type of service, type of fluid, pressure, temperature, fluid compatibility, seats and seal trim for valves, elastomers, and mechanical seals.
  • Knowledge of pump seal plans.
  • Develop High Pressure Tube and Tube fittings Spec for Hydrogen Service.
  • Develop drawings, perform equipment selection and BOM for our high-pressure pneumatic test tree in collaboration with Engineering, QC and Fabrication team.
  • Mentor and develop junior engineers, fostering their technical growth and professional development.

Technical Support

  • Investigate every option to have specs and standards to be thorough and sound as possible.
  • Quickly gain understanding where Startec’s specs and standards are to perform gap analysis of missing specs and standards.
  • Obtain plan to update current specs (Timing, budget if needing to purchase subscriptions to other codes).
  • Authenticate Professional Work Products where necessary.
  • Offer technical support to address complex mechanical engineering issues.
  • Perform root cause analysis and propose effective solutions.
  • Promote a culture of continuous improvement by implementing lessons learned and best practices.

Technical Expertise & Innovation

  • Stay up to date with ABSA and other Jurisdictions from a Piping Registration Perspective to support Engineers where required.
  • Stay updated on industry trends, advancements, and best practices in mechanical engineering.
  • Understand how to create pipe specifications and perform wall thickness calculations of tubing and piping so specifications include design limitations of fittings, piping, o’lets, and tubing.
  • Be able to create line designation tables and to update NDE, Pneumatic Testing, Hydrostatic Testing.
  • Blast radius calculations for pneumatic testing.
  • Provide technical expertise and support in resolving complex mechanical engineering issues.
  • Foster innovation and suggest new technologies, materials, and design methodologies.Top of Form

Documentation & Reporting

  • Prepare and maintain technical documentation, including piping line class specifications to ASME B31.3, standardization of assembly drawings, technical bulletins, and checklists.
  • Develop technical presentations and reports for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ensure accurate and up-to-date record-keeping of files and documentation.
  • Develop standard parts where needed for our ERP system.

Top of Form PROJECT COLLABORATION (Weighting 15%)Project Collaboration

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, stakeholders, and clients to define project scopes, objectives, and deliverables if special project specific piping specifications are to be created.
  • Review customer specifications and provide comments and exceptions and develop gap analysis

Client Engagement & Relationship Management

  • Collaborate with sales and business development teams to assist in proposal development and client presentations.
  • Establish and maintain strong client relationships, ensuring customer satisfaction and identifying repeat business opportunities.
  • Offer technical assistance and support to clients throughout the project lifecycle if required.

QUALITY ASSURANCE & COMPLIANCE (Weighting 15%)Quality Assurance

  • Implement quality control processes, and conduct reviews, and inspections to ensure adherence to design standards, specifications, and compliance with applicable codes and regulations.
  • Collaborate with quality assurance teams to address non-conformities and implement corrective actions.Top of Form
  • Ensure that mechanical designs and systems comply with health and safety regulations.
  • Promote a safety-conscious culture among the mechanical engineering team.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience (12+ years) in mechanical engineering in fabrication shops, focusing on packaging skids for industrial applications in oil and gas and/or renewable energy. Experience in Western Canada is preferable.
  • Needs to do their own work over delegating work.
  • Networks into the above industries to be able to get information readily or help Startec win more projects.
  • Subject matter expert in mechanical engineering for fabrication shops that package skids.
  • Timely in providing updates.
  • Needs to be organized and will check work thoroughly and be open minded / able to accept feedback to improve documented deliverables (specifications, standards, procedures).
  • Solid understanding of mechanical design principles, industry regulations, codes, and standards including (ASME, API, CSA, AGA).
  • Strong leadership and communication skills, enabling effective collaboration with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills, with meticulous attention to detail.
  • Professional Engineering (P.Eng.) license or equivalent certification preferred.Bottom of Form
