Title of the Job: Mechanical Contract Inspector (Internal Only)

Location: Edmonton, AB

Job Description: The Mechanical Contract Inspector is responsible for coordinating the work of external mechanical contractors working on a variety of equipment in City facilities. You will also ensure that work is being performed as specified to meet the needs of the client departments.With a focus on the City of Edmonton’s Cultural Commitments to Safe, Helpful, Accountable, Integrated and Excellent.What will you do?

  • Meet with client department representatives to discuss and assess work requirements
  • Participate in all aspects of commissioning process including witnessing pre-functional, functional and system testing
  • Obtain estimates from contractors, submitting quotation to clients, evaluating quotes and preparing documentation for awarding contracts
  • Coordinate contracts with external mechanical contractors including the preparation of specifications/standards, tender documents and renewal of ongoing contracts
  • Monitor contractors for adherence to contract specifications and code requirements
  • Conduct onsite inspections of completed work
  • Liaise with other trades Foreperson and contract inspectors to coordinate the scheduling of work
  • Liaise with Foreperson and Supervisor to determine allocation of work flow to internal or contract resources
  • Participate in health, safety and environmental meetings and training sessions
  • Perform all tasks in an environmentally safe manner
  • Perform other related duties as required

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma supplemented by Journeyperson Certificate recognized by Government of Alberta Advanced Education and Technology in an applicable mechanical trade is a requirement
  • A minimum of 5 years progressively responsible experience as a Journeyperson in a mechanical trade supplemented with experience in contractor project supervision, site inspections, job estimating and construction costs, specification preparation and the interpretation and application of regulatory codes as they pertain to construction projects
  • Journeyman Certificate in related trade
  • Five years progressive experience as a Journeyman. Preferable to have construction and maintenance experience

Assets:

  • Experience and certification in the Plumbing and Heating trades (refrigeration and ice plant) would be considered an asset

Skills required for success:

  • Experience operating computer systems and utilizing office automation software is required
  • Knowledge of the tools, methods, standards and theory of the various trades in order to provide adequate inspection, supervision and equipment diagnosis
  • Knowledge of applicable health, safety and environmental protection rules and regulations and how they apply to the work
  • Ability to evaluate options, exercise sound judgment and resolve problems in situations that sometimes require immediate decisions
  • Considerable knowledge of project management and tendering contract processes with proven abilities to plan and organize projects, including relevant administrative procedures
  • Highly developed interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively with clients, contractors, trades personnel, Engineers etc. and to resolve situations requiring immediate judgment
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret drawings, specifications and to plan and schedule the work of contractors
  • Highly effective written/verbal communication and presentation skills
  • Hire is dependent on Police Information Check satisfactory to the City of Edmonton and there may be a cost associated with this requirement
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 driver’s licence (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver’s permit is a requirement of this position
