Join us.POSITION OVERVIEW:The Globe and Mail is looking for an interactive editor to join our digital storytelling team on an 18-month contract.The successful candidate will be part of a growing team that uses code, data and multimedia to produce impactful journalism for The Globe’s audience across all platforms. You should be excited about combining full-stack development with a passion for great journalism. Your approach to design and development should be versatile – the work will range from creating visual, digital experiences for one-off stories to playing a key technological role in the newsroom’s most ambitious projects. You will turn story features into tools and templates, giving colleagues the ability to execute faster on good ideas.We are small team with a big mandate: to innovate The Globe’s digital storytelling through experimentation and iteration. We work collaboratively across all aspects of The Globe’s coverage, including long-term investigative projects, breaking news, immersive story formats and visual templates. We are not prescriptive about tools and technology: editors on the team are journalists first and should be comfortable — and excited — about continually learning new skills and techniques in the service of telling the best story possible. - A 3D deep dive into Toronto’s office vacancy problem

RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Take a story or project idea and create a plan for how to design and code it
- Build and support templates and tools for a variety of digital story forms
- Collaborate with reporters, editors and visual journalists on immersive, digital-first stories and projects
- Act as an ambassador for digital storytelling in journalism across the newsroom
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience working with Svelte, Node or AWS services
- Experience coding in HTML, CSS and JavaScript to create digital stories and news applications
- A strong design sense, particularly in delivering content to mobile readers
- An ability to work with data to create interactive visuals that work on all platforms
- An ability to juggle multiple projects of varying deadlines and sizes
- An understanding of why accessibility matters in producing interactive experiences for our readers and an ability to audit work to ensure it meets accessibility guidelines
- Additional skills that would be an asset:
+ Familiarity with mapping software and visualization libraries
