We innovate and apply science in order to ensure the safety and integrity of products and services, in line with our vision of science for a safer world.Job DescriptionJob PurposeThis is a 12-month contract position.To provide, complete and be responsible for handling, processing, packaging, and tracking hazardous waste for shipment, treatment, and disposal for both facilities.Responsibilities and DutiesWork Safely
- Understand and anticipate possible safety issues by taking all necessary precautions prior to initiation of experiments
- Abide by health and safety guidelines prescribed by governing bodies and the TRC Environmental Health and Safety Committee
- General housekeeping of laboratory and workstation
Manage and Administer the Hazardous Waste Program
- Ensure, prepare and update procedures for hazardous waste management and chemical handling including, sampling, weighing, and storing chemical containers
- Ensure and update procedure to reflect current provincial and federal regulations, laws, and amendments governing hazardous wastes and materials are being followed
- Be responsible for receiving, identifying, sorting, and preparing for disposal of waste solvent and hazardous materials
- Verify hazardous wastes and classify them for disposal
- Track inventories of Waste Solvent and hazardous materials on-site
- Dispense hazardous materials from bulk containers to smaller individual containers
- Prepare information for purchase requisitions or orders
- Coordinate with Chemists to ensure all SOP’s are followed regarding waste management
- Collect environmental monitoring samples and submit for analysis
- Operate machines or equipment to remove, package, store, or transport waste materials
- Be responsible for registering new waste with Ministry of Environment
- Ensure shipments are picked up on time
Support Environmental, Health and Safety Programs
- Assist in the development and implementation of safety programs including SOPs, policies and training as required.
- Participate in the assessment of health and safety programs for regulatory compliance and best practices.
- Participate in workplace audits and investigation of Health and Safety incidents and concerns.
- Assist in the preparation of annual environmental reports ( NPRI, ChemTRAC…etc)
Perform other Duties
- Perform other duties and complete additional projects as assigned, commensurate with job knowledge and experience

Working Relationships
- Act as first point of contact with any issues with transportations codes
- Coordinate with vendors about delays in the shipping process
- Coordinate and communicate with all hazardous waste generators
Education Requirements
- A University degree in Chemistry, environmental science/science/engineering, waste management, or toxicology required
- One to two years’ experience working as a hazardous waste technician
- Must have a good understanding of the safety procedures, federal and provincial laws regulating hazardous waste disposal
- Must have a valid driver’s license and a reliable means of transportation to travel to the Vaughan facility

Physical & Working Conditions
- The employee must frequently lift, push, pull and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift, push, pull and/or move up to 75 pounds
