Title of the Job: GIS Planner I

Location: Edmonton, AB

Job Description: Do you get excited about the role that Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and data analysis play in planning for growth and change within dynamic and rapidly changing urban environments? If so, we may have the job for you! The City of Edmonton is seeking a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Planner to provide professional services related to geospatial system development, data management, data analysis, and graphic display of land-use and transportation model results. You will also be assisting the development of methods, tools and approaches that will support evidence-based decision making as it relates to land use and transportation planning.What will you do?

  • Design and develop effective GIS products, and templates to support land use and transportation models
  • Integrate, interpret and synthesize interdisciplinary spatial data and input to the City’s modeling framework
  • Execute Models and summarize outputs
  • Conduct a wide variety of spatial analysis using the model outputs and synthesize the analytics to communicate the story
  • Manipulate a range of digital data, exporting to other programs
  • Provide spatial data analysis support to a variety of projects that have both capital and operating budget implications, such as: Mobility and Growth Analysis
  • Support surveys, impact studies, or other research to compile and analyze data on economic, social, regulatory, or physical factors affecting land use growth and infrastructure requirements
  • Assist in assessing business requirements, evaluating data design and maintaining and analyzing data sets to prepare the required standard and custom analytic and spatial products
  • Be a valuable resource for spatial data updates, analysis and data mining for the Land Use and Transportation Modeling platform
  • Understand and support the land use and transportation model applications that will be used to forecast and evaluate the potential impacts of land use and transportation policy
  • Utilize computational and technological skills in GIS based software used by City Planning to develop relationships between spatial data sets, run queries, and conduct data validation processes
  • Support senior staff with planning inquiries from council, senior administration, the public, developers, and consultants
  • Support the senior staff to prepare reports with reliable and accurate information and process large data sets with quality assessment and quality control mechanisms

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Urban Planning or a degree related to the functions specific to the position
  • 2 years of progressive planning experience

Assets:

  • Training in FME, Tableau, Scripting with Python, SQL, ESRI ArcGIS, QGIS
  • Relatable designations or certifications

Skills required for success:

  • Strong knowledge of computer softwares necessary to the collection, maintenance, analysis and presentation of spatial related data
  • Ability to adapt to emerging technologies
  • Knowledge of statistical techniques, research methodology, and performance measurement
  • Knowledge of data integration, cleaning, analysis and management
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of urban planning and regional planning: knowledge of applicable legislation, regulatory requirements and applicable governing policies and plans
  • Ability to communicate complex information effectively both orally and in writing
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of internal and external partners and stakeholders and appropriately engage the public
