Job Description: As an Engineer in Grid Operations, you provide a wide range of engineering support services that will ensure technical soundness, reliability, safety and cost effectiveness of the utility and its Electrical Distribution Power System. The Engineer develops specifications; participates in short and long range contingency planning; performs operational design reviews; prepares engineering, technical or business reports and studies; performs analysis, testing and evaluations; provides timely technical support and consultation, demonstrates effective project management and process efficiencies; reviews, develops and/or presents business proposals, plans, designs, processes, operational procedures and practices.KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Works with various stakeholders (Engineering, Stations, & Distribution Services groups) in the planning, design, and construction of new or existing primary electrical distribution plant.
- Reviews engineering, technical or business reports and studies; performs analysis, testing and evaluations.
- Performs operational design reviews on all primary electrical projects.
- Performs load transfer studies, and participates in short and long term contingency planning.
- Provides timely technical support and consultation, demonstrates effective project management and process efficiencies; reviews, develops and/or presents business proposals, plans, designs, processes, operational procedures and practices.
- Undertakes reliability investigation and studies, and prepares reports with recommendations.
- Acts as a change agent in adoption and continual use of standards across organization in design and construction stages
- May be called upon to act as a team or project leader
- Participates in implementing corporate goals.
- Performs analyses and determines appropriate actions to improve and optimize grid operations and reliability.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng) in the province of Ontario
- Three to five (3-5) years of Engineering experience, preferably in utility industry operations
- University degree in Engineering; Electrical Engineering
- Experience with various distribution systems commonly used in the City of Toronto, associated with all aspects of capital, maintenance and customer supply projects, up to and including 27.6kV, 13.8kV, 4kV, in underground, overhead, stations, and network environments
- Experience with review of electrical design and specifications for various distribution system configuration i.e. Dual radial, secondary mesh, Loop, URD and CRD
- Valid Class “G” Drivers License recommended
- Familiarity with Protection & Control and station configurations
- Fluent in the application of operational technology, such as SCADA, CAD, AM/FM, NMS, engineering records, and specialized engineering application software
- Strong verbal and written communication skills. Possesses active listening skills; openly contributes ideas
- Customer focused; demonstrates a pro-active service orientation, able to meet customer needs in a flexible but cost-effective manner
- Possesses strong negotiating/relationship building ability; understands the attitudes, interests, needs and perspective of others; negotiates for win/win
- Proven skills in effective project management, operations, business process and productivity improvements
- Proven effective problem-solving and analytical ability, makes sound and timely decisions; able to timely identify key issues and/or complex situations and engage key stakeholders.
- Self-motivated, operates with a high degree of independence and can visualize possibilities and opportunities.
- Demonstrated knowledge of technical standards, work protection, relevant safety and environmental legislation and regulations
- Aptitude and experience in adapting to, managing and facilitating change, willing to challenge the status quo.
- Familiarity in the use of business principles and systems for administration and management of projects and resources
