Title of the Job: Data Strategist

Location: Toronto, ON

Job Description: Story Behind the Need:

  • CIDA Operations & Strategy (OU20014366): Governance strategy and reporting for the portfolio work across CIDA. Managing CIDA operations such as workforce management, financial, benefits, and project reporting and management.
  • The Data Strategist is responsible for managing and optimizing the intake process for data and analytics requests across business lines, aligning them with CID&A objectives. This role requires a strong ability to leverage existing data to tell compelling stories, communicate insights, and drive strategic decision-making. The successful candidate will support senior leadership by creating professional executive decks, reports, and presentations that clearly articulate strategy, performance, and direction. This individual will act as a bridge between data teams and business stakeholders, ensuring that the right data is used to drive impact.

Typical Day in Role:

  • Intake Process Management: Oversee and streamline the intake process for data and analytics requests from various business units, ensuring timely, clear, and efficient management.
  • Storytelling and Strategic Communication: Leverage data to craft compelling, clear, and strategic narratives for leadership and business stakeholders, demonstrating progress, identifying opportunities, and aligning insights with overall Bank objectives.
  • Executive Deck Creation: Develop professional, high-quality executive decks and presentations to communicate data-driven strategies, insights, and recommendations to senior leadership.
  • Data Synthesis and Reporting: Create concise, visually compelling reports and dashboards that provide actionable insights to help business lines understand key metrics, performance trends, and areas for improvement.
  • KPI Management: Establish, track, and manage key performance indicators (KPIs) for the intake process, ensuring measurable outcomes are aligned with CID&A objectives and business goals.
  • Impact Analysis & Business Alignment: Conduct ongoing impact analysis of data and analytics initiatives, measuring their effectiveness, ROI, and alignment with the business goals. Use these insights to tell data-driven stories that demonstrate progress and value.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Collaborate effectively with internal and external stakeholders across the Bank to identify their data needs, set priorities, and ensure clear communication and delivery of results.
  • Business Requirements & Process Definition: Participate in the definition of business requirements and processes, ensuring progress is measurable against planned objectives. Perform analysis and provide detailed reports to assess project success and business impact.
  • Data Source Expertise: Investigate and gain deep expertise in available data sources, determining how they can be transformed and interpreted to support analytics, reporting, and strategic decisionmaking.
  • Continuous Improvement: Continuously refine the intake process, storytelling methodologies, and reporting frameworks to ensure they evolve to meet the needs of the department and the Bank.

Candidate Requirements/Must-Have skills:

  • 8+ years of experience in data strategy, business analytics, or a similar role within an enterprise-level organization.
  • 5+ years of experience in creating executive-level presentations and reports that align with strategic
  • goals.
  • 5+ years of expertise in storytelling with data and have a strong business acumen.
  • Must be able to interpret and consolidate large amounts of information in actionable recommendations. Uses
  • sound judgment in the creation of analysis, validation, interpretation and presentation of findings.
  • 5+ years of experience managing stakeholder relationships and working with cross-functional teams.
  • 5+ years of experience in data visualization tools (Power BI, Tableau, Looker) and storytelling platforms like PowerPoint.
  • 5+ years of experience with KPI tracking and impact analysis to measure progress and report on the value delivered.

Nice-To-Have Skills:

  • Strong knowledge of project management principles and methodologies, including familiarity with
  • the full project life cycle from initiation to closure.
  • Familiarity with data analysis tools and languages (Excel, SQL, Python, R) is an advantage.
  • Understanding of the enterprise data lifecycle, including data governance, quality, and reporting
  • best practices.

Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Data Analytics, Strategy, or a related field.
  • Advanced degree (MBA, Master’s in Data Science, or similar) preferred but not required.

Best Candidate:

  • Experience: Has worked as a data strategist or in data strategist departments.
  • Skills: Expert in creating executive-level decks with PowerPoint.
  • Contributions: Has created presentations that showcase the benefits or values of their work or establish new processes.

Average Candidate:

  • Experience: May have some experience in data-related roles but not specifically as a data strategist.
  • Skills: Proficient in PowerPoint but not necessarily at an expert level.
  • Contributions: May have created presentations but not at the executive level or with the same impact.

Candidate Review & Selection

  • Two rounds of interviews:

o 1st round – HM – 45 mins – 60 mins – MS Teams Video –Introduction, project overview, and what we are looking for, next 20 to 30 mins is to present about the take-home assignment and Q&A. The rest is for behavioral questions and others.
o 2nd round –Director – 30 mins – In person– ‘’get to know’’ questions such as ‘’Tell about you’’ and other behavioral questions.

  • Additional interviews may be required.
