Learn more about the opportunities we create for students, employees, and our province at .Position SummaryReporting to the Associate Director, Student Services, Counsellors work collaboratively within Student Services and across campus departments with instructors, program chairs, and deans.Counsellors on the mental health team are responsible for promoting student mental health and well-being, personal development, student success, and student retention by designing, and providing a comprehensive range of non-clinical psychological and educational services to assist enrolled students in achieving improved well-being in their personal, academic, and professional lives.Position responsibilities and accountabilities include but are not limited to:

  • Provides short-term counselling (in-person) to BVC students, using a stepped care model.
  • Assesses, develops, and implements counselling strategies that address colonization, racism, sexism, and poverty.
  • Offers personal, group, and crisis counselling, referring students to other professionals as needed.
  • Supports students in resolving emotional and interpersonal issues affecting their well-being and academic success.
  • Assesses risk, including harm to self/others, and collaborates with sexual and gender-based violence response.
  • Provides trauma debriefing and encourages student self-care.
  • Delivers presentations, training, and group counselling sessions.
  • Maintains confidentiality, writes case notes, and collaborates on mental health events.
  • Engages in professional development and stays current in mental health practices.

Required qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree – Social Work, Psychology, Educational Psychology.
  • 2 – 4 years of relevant experience.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • In-depth knowledge of mental illness, learning disabilities, psychiatric disabilities, physical disabilities as well as counselling techniques, adult learning principles, academic accommodations and human rights are considered an asset
