Please direct any accommodation requests to our recruitment team.Primary functionReporting to the Manager, within an environment of rapid change, this position works under general direction and with a considerable degree of independence, receiving instruction and advice only on matters involving significant departures from established policy.Home Location: Toronto
Secondary Location: Not applicableReport to: Manager, Audit And Compliance UnitKey accountabilities

  • Applies a variety of audit strategies in the examination and review of lawyer accounts.
  • Conducts various types of examinations: a) in-depth target examinations on high-risk lawyers; b) random examinations; c) high-risk breach examinations; d) block billing examinations; e) pre-payment/spot checking; f) on-going monitoring. This process includes communicating with lawyers, providing analyses of results, and recommending further action.
  • Ability to identify billing patterns that are not consistent with rules and policies.
  • Processes appeals / reassessments of accounts that were examined and failed. This includes reviewing, summarizing and recommending action to Manager.
  • Prepares written communications to lawyers regarding the outcome of the appeals. Maintains records of audit results.
  • Multitasking and time management skills is essential; complete the required number of audits with accuracy and efficiency, within the prescribed timelines, and managing numerous audits all at different stages of the audit process.
  • Prepares comprehensive, succinct written reports that address the key issues of the examination findings, setting out facts cogently, objectively and accurately and in appropriate detail, and including a well-reasoned analysis and objective assessment of accounts.
  • Develops recommendations for lawyers to improve their billing practices (i.e. to reduce non-compliance and error rates).
  • Identifies options and/or makes recommendations for subsequent changes on the portal and work procedures to decrease risk and increase efficiency.
  • Responds to issues and queries from panel managers (i.e. District Area Directors) across the province, and/or Panel Management Office regarding status of lawyer audits and audit outcomes.
  • Meets performance expectations by completing the required number of random and target audits each month
  • Proactive in providing solutions to complicated audit matters

Required skills & experience

  • University degree or equivalent training in regulatory compliance or auditing.
  • Minimum of 2-3 years of experience in related fields such as regulatory or compliance audits.
  • Analytical skills to identify issues, analyze problems and develop innovative solutions to risk management affecting various levels of organization management.
  • Advanced skills using database software such MS Access, Power BI, and PeopleSoft
  • Ability to work independently, work on and manage multiple projects by prioritizing them to ensure timely completion
  • Experience with comparing policies, procedures and regulations to ensure compliance with processes.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze, summarize and synthesize data.
  • Ability to demonstrate excellent written communication skills; communicate specific and detailed information clearly and concisely when identifying billing issues to lawyers
  • Ability to identify issues related to system billing rules and policies, and providing systemic solutions that would enhance the billing system
