  • Practicum days are typically Tuesday, Wednesday, Saturday or Sunday, biweekly and may include days and/or evening shifts depending on the placement.
  • Shifts are typically 8 hours/day biweekly
  • Instructors work with a group of students in a practicum setting primarily focused on the care of older adult patients
  • The majority of practicum placements are within a 1.5 hour drive of North Campus.
  • Instructors may be required to facilitate simulation based education (online and/or in person simulation on campus) as a required component of the practicum portion of this course

To view this course description, please click the following link and enter the course code from above:Responsibilities/Accountabilities:The primary responsibility of the applicant is to (develop and) teach a theoretically, methodologically sophisticated and relevant course at the university level within the parameters of the course description listed above.Within this nursing practicum, the Clinical Sessional Lecturer will:

  • facilitate and support student learning in a practicum environment as students develop Entry to Practice competencies
  • Support the application and development of knowledge, skills, judgement, and foster the development of critical thinking and clinical judgement, in accordance with the College of Nurses of Ontario Practice Standards and related documents, University and program policies and procedures.

In keeping with a technology-enhanced learning environment utilizing laptop computers and wireless connectivity, the Sessional Lecturer will deliver the course using a technology-enhanced learning approach that includes a variety of inclusive teaching and learning strategies and assessments. The Sessional Lecturer will prepare, deliver and grade all course material and assignments and be available for consultation with students during and following completion of the course session.This position falls within the bargaining unit represented by the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC) and will be subject to the terms and conditions of the collective agreement between the University and PSAC. The collective agreement may be found on the Human Resources section of our website. Candidates will be required to certify that they are currently legally eligible to work in Canada for the duration of the contract.Qualifications:The successful candidate will have demonstrated excellent teaching contributions with a proven aptitude for teaching at the undergraduate/graduate level.Clinical placements at the university include engaging with organizations which have vaccination requirements as well as requirements to complete a Criminal Reference Check (vulnerable sector). In order to fulfill the employment obligations of a Clinical Sessional Instructor, employees will be required to comply with the requirements set by these agencies. As a result, upon hire, Clinical Sessional Instructors will be required to successfully complete a Declaration and Self-Disclosure Form and a Criminal Reference Check for the vulnerable sector, as well as an Entry Immunization Form (or returning immunization form if applicable), to confirm criminal record and immunization status. All Clinical Sessional Instructors must be fully vaccinated (a double-dose vaccine or Johnson & Johnson single dose) against Covid-19, and documentation of boosters (as some agencies require boosters).Required Skills:

  • A proven commitment to providing innovative and inclusive teaching strategies
  • Evidence of an ability to work in a collaborative environment
  • Excellent communication skills with an ability to maintain effective relationships with a range of faculty, staff and students
  • Candidates will have demonstrated excellence in teaching undergraduate/graduate students in a

program * Demonstrated knowledge and experience with the Learning Management System, Canvas

  • Demonstrated ability to deliver classes remotely, using online modalities such as Kaltura Media and Google Meets
  • Proven experience managing large classes and diverse populations
  • Experience coordinating and supervising Teaching Assistants as applicable
  • Excellent organizational skills are needed to effectively manage course delivery, the marking of assignments and exams and the ability respond to student enquiries in a timely manner

In addition to the above:

  • Applicants for this position must be Registered Nurses (Regular or Extended class) and hold a current license entitling them to practice with no restrictions with the College of Nurses of Ontario.

Education:

  • An undergraduate degree in nursing (BScN) is required, a Master’s degree in nursing or a related field would be an asset.

Experience:

  • Successful candidates must have a minimum of 3 years of recent and relevant experience
  • Training, or experience with simulation/virtual simulation would be an asset
  • Preference will be given to those candidates with demonstrated and documented teaching excellence experiences in undergraduate and/or graduate in a post-secondary environment.
  • Evidence of the candidates teaching philosophy, courses taught and developed and teaching effectiveness in the form of a teaching dossier if required.
