You will report to the Chemistry Laboratory Coordinator and contribute to the efficient and successful operations of the undergraduate chemistry labs. In coordination with other laboratory technical staff and course instructors, you will have specific course assignments, and be responsible for preparing all chemicals in the various forms and mixtures for delivery with required equipment to specific labs. The team of Laboratory Technicians are expected to work together in both set-up and clean-up after all chemistry courses. You will act as a resource to provide direction on procedures and practices, laboratory protocols and experimental procedures and equipment. Your essential role in maintaining standard operating procedures, equipment inventories, and catalogs of major assets has a direct impact on the lab experience of faculty and students, and the effectiveness of lab experiments.Your responsibilities will include:
- Collaborating with staff and course instructors to determine lab set up requirements
- Setting-up lab/workshop according to research and/or course schedules
- Preparing, assembling and setting-up material, equipment and supplies used in teaching and/or research labs
- Following rules and procedural instructions when preparing chemical mixtures and/or solutions
- Documenting and maintaining standard operating procedures
- Applying established standards when cleaning lab, rooms and equipment
- Ensuringthe safe handling of specialized lab equipment and materials while operating within close proximity to others
- Serving as a technical resource on laboratory protocols, and experimental procedures and equipment
Essential Qualifications:
- Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry or acceptable combination of equivalent experience.
- Minimum of two years of related job experience working in a laboratory setting, preferably in a post-secondary environment
- Must be able to operate the following equipment: Balances (both analytical and top-loading types), pH meters, spectrophotometers, ultra sonic baths, hot/stir plates, heating mantels, fume hoods, dishwashers, melting point analyzers, various types of scientific glassware, vacuum pumps, rotary evaporators, micro pipettes, personal computer, photocopier/printer
- Strong proficiency with Microsoft Office 365 suite applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneDrive, SharePoint, etc.)
- Excellent verbal and written communication skill
- Excellent organizational skills with attention to details
- Demonstrated ability to work efficiently both independently and as part of a team
- Must have the ability to exercise sound judgment
- Must have the physical stamina to effectively carry out the duties associated with the position as this position involves a considerable amount of walking and standing on a daily basis and occasional lifting
- Must have first aidand CPR training, WHMIS, and Chemical Spill Clean-up training or be willing to be trained
