Metrolinx is an agency of the Government of Ontario.At Metrolinx, equity, diversity and inclusion are essential to living our values of serving with passion, thinking forward and playing as a team.Our Bus Fleet Support Services Office is seeking a Bus Reliability Specialist who under the direction of the Manager, Warranty Programs – Bus Fleet Support Services, will be responsible to continuously improve the safety and reliability of the bus fleet, using predictive maintenance (PdM) technology and LEAN processes. The Bus Reliability Specialist is the foremost RCM (Reliability Centered Maintenance) expert on the BFM team to identify the relative health of each bus in the fleet, report on the bus reliability programs, and lead the programs that improve bus safety and reliability.

  • Possession of a valid Truck & Coach Technician Certificate (310T) is REQUIRED
  • Experience in leading LEAN programs that reduce all forms of waste, while improving bus safety and reliability
  • Background in Mechanical Engineering with experience in Reliability management mostly in Transit vehicle Operations.

What will I be doing?

  • Define the most critical bus design and maintenance issues that impact on the safety and reliability of the bus fleet
  • Use LEAN tools, such as A3, RCA, Five Whys, Fishbone Diagrams, and other processes to improve bus safety and reliability
  • Publish Failure Modes and Effect Analysis (FMEA) reports for the most critical failures found on the bus fleet
  • Use Predictive Maintenance (PdM) and Condition Based Maintenance (CBM) tools and technologies to assess the health of the fleet, identify so-called “rogue” buses, and those that are nearing imminent failures
  • Lead the design and implementation of PdM processes used to identify the buses that are nearing a critical failure, and integrate this data set with the Infor EAM solution
  • Develop processes to enhance coordination with the NOC, such that drivers are more able to keep buses on the road, and improve the definition of bus performance and reliability issues
  • Define the root cause of the most critical failures that impact bus safety and reliability
  • Develop corrective action plans to rectify bus design and maintenance issues that cause defects that impact bus safety and reliability
  • Develop test procedures to validate technical findings when establishing root cause and corrective actions
  • Provides subject matter expertise with respect to Vehicle Maintenance Reporting Standards (VMRS), and continuously refines the VMRS processes, procedures and training to provide optimal failure reporting
  • Documents and reports in support of commercial efforts with suppliers and external stakeholders to improve bus safety and reliability
  • Reports on Portable Test Equipment (PTE) and Bench Test Equipment (BTE) that can aid in improving bus safety and reliability
  • When modifications to the bus are required, the Bus Reliability Specialist will publish Field Modification Instructions (FMIs) that document how bus modifications are to be performed
  • Support the Manager – Equipment Engineering with the development of specifications for new vehicles, including bus design, performance standards, evaluation criteria, training, BTE, PTE, and warranty
  • Act as the SME for all internal and external stakeholders, including police services, MTO, MOL, and others as required by the Director – BFM
  • Represent BFM at the Joint Health & Safety Committee to identify safety hazards for drivers, other Mx employees, and customers, and lead the resolution of these hazards
  • Support the warranty program with bus OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers, by acting as the Subject Matter Expert (SME) in assessing warranty part failures, the root cause of warranty defects, and all investigations and documentation in support of Fleet Defects / Latent Defects
  • Support the Manager – Equipment Engineering with the development of specifications for new vehicles, including bus design, performance standards, evaluation criteria, training, BTE, PTE, and warranty
  • Work with internal Mx managers and staff to improve bus safety, reliability, and the customer experience
  • The Bus Reliability Specialist develops and implements tools and technologies to improve bus safety and reliability by intervening prior to the consequences of a failure, with the objective of improving Mean Distance Between Failure, increased fleet availability, and reduced operating costs
  • Designs, deploys and manages the Bus Reliability Control Board to visually track the health of the fleet, reliability trends, pareto analysis, etc
  • Leads all LEAN programs that reduce all forms of waste, while improving bus safety and reliability
  • Leads programs that directly impact on costs and expenses
  • Supports warranty programs to increase warranty recovery from suppliers
  • Leads program with internal and external stakeholders
  • Advises other employees on topics related to the incumbent’s area of expertise
  • Provides leadership oversight and direction to staff and consultants
  • May provide Supervisory duties in the absence of a Supervisor when overseeing technical programs

What skills & qualifications do I need?

  • Completion of a diploma in asset reliability, Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM), engineering technology (mechanical, electrical or electronic), maintenance technology, relevant engineering education – or a combination of education, training and experience deemed equivalent
  • Demonstrated years of experience in a maintenance environment that incorporated Reliability Centered Maintenance and/or Predictive Maintenance technologies. Has experience with mobile, heavy duty equipment.
  • Possession of a valid Truck & Coach Technician Certificate (310T) is REQUIRED
  • A valid non-probationary class G license and able to meet and maintain the corporate standard for a good driving record as well as able to obtain a CZ License is REQUIRED
  • Industry designation such as SMRP is an ASSET
  • Sound knowledge of mobile equipment maintenance and reliability principles including RCM, CBM, PdM
  • Proficiency with EAM software platforms – integrating asset health meters into EAM, turning alerts into Work Requisitions, and maximizing the output of EAM data to inform reliability programs
  • Proficiency in the use of telematics/vehicle locating systems, the polling, manipulation, and analysis of data records therein, and the use of such data to identify, assess and diagnose potential failures/actual bus failures
  • Detailed knowledge in control systems, power systems, electrical, electronic, mechanical, hydraulic and pneumatic systems used in engines, transmissions, steering, suspension and brake systems, all automotive fluids, fuel and cooling systems, air conditioning systems, door systems and hybrid electric propulsion systems
  • Advanced user in MS Excel
  • Proficiency in MS Office (e.g. Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, etc.)
  • Proficiency in the use of fluid analysis equipment, the polling, manipulation, and analysis of Interpersonal and oral/written/presentation communication skills to develop standard procedures, and documents, and reports alternative technological approaches, options, and solutions must be knowledgeable of the concepts and practices of vehicle testing programs and procedures. Must have comprehensive knowledge of the latest diagnostic technologies and be able to diagnose and correct failures in any systems and components utilized on automotive powered buses and related shop equipment sound judgement and well developed analytical, problem solving, personal computing and verbal and written communications skills
