Job Description: We currently have an opening for a Jr. Structural Engineer in our Markham office. The successful candidate will have 2+ years of Ontario experience with structural engineering design, client specifications, scheduling, cost estimating, tendering, construction, inspection, assessment, rehabilitation, and technical writing. You’ll provide technical expertise and assist intermediate and senior Structural Engineers and Project Managers on municipal projects and proposals for public sector clients.Position Description:Working with a dynamic team in a collaborative work environment, the Jr. Structural Engineer will be based out of one of our Ontario operation locations – Markham, Niagara-on-the-Lake or Kitchener – and will collaborate with staff and deliver projects across Ontario and Canada.Responsibilities include the following:
- Providing support under the guidance of professional engineers in the preparation of designs, cost estimates, and developing cost effective solutions to structural engineering challenges.
- Participating in scheduling, budgeting, tendering, and inspection.
- Assisting Project Managers with advancing projects through the concept, design and construction phases.
- Delivering projects on budget and within identified schedules.
- Engaging in a collaborative work environment with your internal team and external clients, as well as other disciplines and offices.
- Supporting contract administration through the review of shop drawings and answering RFIs.
- Development of design documents, including drawings and specifications.
- Perform site visits to facilitate structural inspections of works under construction for conformance with design documents.
- Perform site visits to facilitate structural inspection and condition assessment of existing structures.
- Technical writing of proposals, predesign reports, and construction memoranda.
Health & Safety Responsibilities:
- Ensure adherence to established policies and procedures within a COR registered environment.
- Follow all safety and non-safety rules and regulations.
- Review and adhere to AE’s health and safety, environmental, and quality standards, operating procedures and policies.
- Understand and uphold the policies that prohibit workplace violence and harassment.
- Participate in regular formal or informal workplace inspections, as necessary.
- Follow safety rules and report unsafe acts or conditions.
- Report all accident and / or incident procedures and unsafe conditions and / or behavior.
- Respond or delegate responsibility immediately to items brought to his / her attention with respect to hazards, defects or non-compliance issues.
- In addition to the above, the duties include those specified under the Occupational Health & Safety Act.
Job RequirementsWhat you will bring to the table:
- Undergraduate degree in Structural Engineering from an accredited post-secondary institution.
- Eligible for registration as an Engineer in Training (EIT) and/or Professional Engineer with PEO.
- 2+ years of progressive experience in designing structures, based in Ontario, is essential.
- Experience designing buildings and water retaining structures in Ontario, is an asset.
- Solid understanding of structural engineering concepts, principles and familiar with relevant codes and standards (e.g., Ontario Building Code, CSA standards, ACI standards)
- Knowledge of various building materials (structural steel, masonry, concrete, and mass timber) in terms of design, assessment, and repair is considered an asset
- Proven integrity to deal with sensitive, privileged and confidential employee or client matters.
- Demonstrated strong coordination and interpersonal skills.
- Results oriented and ability to work under pressure.
- Demonstrated prioritization, problem-solving, analytical, and decision-making skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Excellent organizational skills.
- Developing ability and interest in business development and growth (in public sector) considered an asset.
- Developing ability and interest to liaise and manage clients’, contractors’, and other consultants’ relationships.
- Working knowledge of structural analysis and design software such as SAP2000, ETABS, RFEM, S – Concrete. Experience with AutoCAD (2D and 3D), Revit, is preferred.
- Proficient in use of MS Office Suite of products including collaborative software such as OneNote and SharePoint.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Ability to travel within Canada.
