NAC Indigenous Theatre: Our stories are medicine. The Indigenous Theatre Department at the NAC
nurtures, develops and showcases Indigenous stories at the NAC and in communities all over Canada.
Our mission is to honour our storytellers and thereby aid in the retention, resurgence and resilience of the
multiple and diverse Indigenous cultures of this land.#ReconcileThis:
A collaboration with Facebook (Meta), #ReconcileThis is a four-year initiative that will provide hundreds of
transformative Indigenous Voices with funding, production equipment, and training to share their stories,
history, and to celebrate culture online.Creators’ work will range from artistic performances in dance, theatre, and music, to social media content
creation, podcast production and writing, all in a digital format. #ReconcileThis will also create four, oneyear
Associate Producer positions at NAC Indigenous Theatre, providing emerging Indigenous leaders the
opportunity to shape the national program. Indigenous Theatre will create a microsite to showcase selected
works and creations of Indigenous Voices. Selected creators will be welcomed to share content through
online platforms of their choice with the hashtag #ReconcileThis.Position Description:
As a member of the Indigenous Theatre team, reporting directly to the Producer, the Associate Producer
(#ReconcileThis) will support a broad range of programming for the project #ReconcileThis. Active
participation in internal and external activities and committees, decision-making, and financial control of the
project budget are key elements of this position. The Associate Producer will oversee all elements of
#ReconcileThis including, but not limited to, outreach; artist negotiations; contracts; budget management;
coordination with other NAC teams as necessary (Marketing, Communications, Digital Engagement), and
a variety of external partners in the course of their work.Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Works with the Artistic Director, the Managing Director, the Producer, the Associate Producer and the
Production department in planning, scheduling, and executing #ReconcileThis, including outreach;
artist negotiations; contracts writing; budget management; coordinating with other NAC teams as
necessary (Marketing, Communications, Digital Engagement)
- Works with Facebook (Meta) on all elements of artist training and coordinating equipment transfer for the project
- Works with colleagues at the NAC to implement and promote company-wide practices
- Ensures physically, emotionally and culturally safe spaces as part of a healthy and welcoming environment for all who work here, including visiting artists.
Required qualifications:
- Strong administrative and communication skills with superior attention to detail;
- Demonstrated experience producing (theatre, film, dance, or television);
- Proficient in budgetary preparation and management;
- Proficient in scheduling and contracting;
- Demonstrated knowledge of digital processes and communication;
- Strong project management skills (manage multiple priorities and conflicting agendas and schedules);
- Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, oral and written;
- Demonstrated experience working with and/or in First Nations, Métis and Inuit storytelling, performance, dance, theatre, music, and other forms of artistic expression that honour culturally specific knowledge, languages, territories and experiences;
- Ability and willingness to share Indigenous knowledge and ways of knowing with Indigenous and non-Indigenous people and organizations to effect change, and understanding and respecting cultural protocols in undertaking this work is essential to this role;
- Facility in both official languages is an asset;
- Facility in an Indigenous language is an asset;
- Strong knowledge of social media is an asset.
