The successful candidate must be located near a Canadian Blood Services donor testing site in Brampton, Ontario or Calgary, Alberta and will be working a mixture of on-site and off-site work based on the parameters for our operations to meet the needs of our donors, our staff and our communities. We recognize the land and waters that have inspired our work and offer gratitude to those Indigenous peoples on whose territory we work, live and play.About the roleCanadian Blood Services (CBS) is looking for a Regular, Full-Time Associate Director, Testing – Transmissible Disease, Surveillance and HLA Process Development to join our dynamic Testing team.The Associate Director, Testing is responsible for directing the development and monitoring of Donor Testing performance measures for Transmissible Diseases (TD) and Nucleic Acid Testing, HLA testing for stem cell donors, and TD surveillance activities and developing innovative enhancements to increase efficiency of Laboratory processes and improve tum around time for result reporting for donor samples. The incumbent will research the Blood Banking industry for Best Practices and innovations in technology, automation and emerging processes and technologies for all processes related to Donor Testing. The Associate Director, Testing – Transmissible Disease, Surveillance and HLA Process Development will ensure that best practices are implemented consistently across all Donor Testing sites, and provide project management leadership for change implementation and act as a resource to Donor Testing Laboratories and Head Office staff.Formula for success

  • Leads and optimizes Donor Testing processes through performance analysis, process improvement, automation, and strategic initiatives, while fostering innovation and efficiency.
  • Researches Blood Banking industry for best practices and innovations in technology and automation and emerging processes and technologies. Ensures that Best Practices are implemented consistently across all Donor Testing sites.
  • Directs the project management activities for change implementation at the Donor Testing sites and acts as a resource to Donor Testing Laboratories and Head Office staff.

Desired education and skills

  • Post secondary level education in a relevant discipline from a recognized academic institution. B.Sc. in Laboratory Science, Microbiology or Virology, or ART in Microbiology or Virology or equivalent experience required.
  • Licensure with the College of Medical Technologists of Ontario (CMLTO) or College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Alberta (CMLTA) is required for candidates with a Medical Laboratory Technologist qualification.
  • Ten years of experience in clinical transfusion medicine or clinical laboratory settings.
  • Experience in molecular testing will be considered an asset.

  • This role will work in a hybrid environment with requirements to be onsite at a Canadian Blood Services location at least 40% of the time/days of the week.
  • Quarterly visits to other donor testing site is required, as well as travel to support implementation projects. Travel to attend meetings and conferences a few times a year may also be required.
