The British Columbia Centre on Substance Use (BCCSU) is seeking an experienced Associate Director, Education and Clinical Activities to support and lead strategic initiatives that shape the future of addiction treatment in BC. Join a passionate and fun team!Reporting to the Director of Education and Clinical Activities, the Associate Director will play a pivotal role in advancing BCCSU’s mission to translate research into education and clinical care guidance. This position involves overseeing the development and dissemination of clinical care guidance documents, evidence-based guidelines, practice support tools, and related educational resources. You’ll also support the supervision of a dedicated team of project managers, medical writers, and trainees, and help lead grant development and fundraising efforts for clinical and educational programs.In collaboration with the Director, you’ll work with a range of internal and external stakeholders, including health authorities, provincial partners, and educational institutions, to foster an integrated approach to substance use care across BC.

  • Support the Director in executing the Centre’s strategy for education and clinical activities, including guideline development, educational offerings, and policy briefs.
  • Lead the development and dissemination of provincial clinical care guidance documents and practice support tools.
  • Supervise and manage a team of program managers, project coordinators, and medical writers.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to support BCCSU strategies, outputs, and clinical/educational infrastructure.
  • Oversee educational programs and work with the interdisciplinary addiction medicine fellowship programs and Directors across the Centre’s training programs.
  • Lead or support fundraising efforts for clinical and educational initiatives.
  • Represent the Centre in key committees, working groups, and networks.

As part of Providence Health Care Research Institute and a University of British Columbia Faculty of Medicine Centre, BCCSU focuses on developing and implementing evidence-based approaches to addiction treatment and substance use policy. By working with a wide range of health authorities, treatment programs, and educational institutions, BCCSU aims to create a unified network to improve care for all British Columbians.What You BringWe’re seeking a clinician with experience in developing and implementing clinical care guidance and/or clinical education, particularly in the area of substance use care. Candidates with experience in health care policy, education, and clinical program development are encouraged to apply.

  • Experience with substance use care and translating evidence into clinical practice.
  • A commitment to cultural safety and humility, anti-racism, and person-centred care.
  • Strong leadership and supervisory experience in project management or clinical programs.
  • Experience working with health care professionals, people with lived and living experience, and educational partners.

Education
A level of education, training, and experience equivalent to a Master’s Degree in Public Health, Health Care Administration, or related field plus a minimum of seven (7) years of research or health care environment experience including experience in leading committee work, collaborative initiatives, project management, research coordination and event planning.Skills and AbilitiesBroad knowledge of addiction and substance use practice and skills required in clinical care, education and research environments.Knowledge of social determinants of health and commitment to addressing the needs of people who are marginalized and face barriers in accessing careWorking knowledge of grant development, including applying for funding, developing proposals, overseeing budgetsStrong written and verbal community skillsStrong organizational and staff managerial skillsProficiency in Microsoft Office required. Experience in or ability to quickly learn computer programs/interfaces is an asset. Knowledge of online survey tools is also an assetAbility to multi-task with attention to detail and awareness of broader structural and institutional issuesAbility to operate related equipment and computer applications.Advanced report writing and presentation skills.Demonstrated commitment to safety of staff and clients.Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.What We OfferSupports the Director in the management of the development and implementation of strategies to ensure the high-quality delivery, compliance and safety of BCCSU’s education and clinical care activities including the supervision of staff across the education and care pillars of the BCCSU, as appropriate.Supports the Director in the execution of all clinical and educational programming and projects through development of strategies and project management.Develops budgets for project plans and new initiatives.As directed, leads and participates in a range of working groups and committees and contributes to the development, planning and delivery of educational and clinically focused BCCSU products and resources (i.e., guidelines, treatment pathways, etc.).Oversees and manages, assigns work to relevant staff, which may include project managers, program managers, and program coordinators. Duties include recruitment, selection, hiring, orientation, performance development, and performance management in conjunction with Human Resources up to and including termination.May oversee the coordination, progress and output of undergraduate and graduate students (i.e., Co-op, Master’s).Works closely with health care professionals who are content experts and other stakeholder groups, to support the development of clinically relevant materials and educational offerings that are appropriate to the target audience.Supports the overall program in the maintenance of relationships with representatives from regional Health Authorities, other addiction medicine clinical facilities, Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons, Canadian College of Family Practice, Canadian Nursing Association, community-based organizations, correctional system, First Nations Health Authorities, Indigenous communities, University of British Columbia, Simon Fraser University, Ministry of Health and Ministry of Mental Health and Addictions, and other organizations/institutions engaged in addiction related work.Collaborates with a variety of stakeholders to develop and evaluate tools to connect and support clinicians working in the field of substance use and addictions in BC.May represent the BCCSU in the community on matters related to clinical care guidance in the field of addiction medicine/addiction nursing.Produce documents, reports and summary of findings for various groups of stakeholders.Performs other related duties as required.
