Job Description: OverviewThis is an Apprentice Electrician (Industrial) position located in Fort Simpson, NTThis is Apprentice duties of the Journeyperson-level work in the repair and maintenance of electrical generation and control equipment, along with auxiliary equipment such as electric motors, transformers, relays, electronic governors, voltage regulators, and other NTPC electrical systems in diesel, solar, and /or hydro generating stations. All work shall be carried out in accordance with the Canadian Electrical Code and Northwest Territories Power Corporation policies and standards.**If you do not currently have copies of your diploma and school transcripts, please request them from the applicable school or ECE as you are required to provide these upon screening**ResponsibilitiesAlways work safely, adhere to all aspects of the NTPC Health & Safety and Environmental programs, comply with all rules & regulations, and continually practice health & safety while performing any duties.Ensure the safety of other employees, contractors and the general public in the workplace by:Reporting any failure to adhere to safety practises or rulesProviding detailed orientations and identification of hazards to all visitorsRemoving hazards or make the workplace safe when leaving a work areaWork within a CMMS work order system for preventative and corrective workorders for the maintenance and repairs all electrical systems, AC and DC single phase and three phase electric motors and assists with scheduled overhauls of diesel electric generation sets. Planned maintenance includes, but is not limited to, cleaning and testing of windings, exciter diode bridges, replacement of bearings and checking and torquing of wire and cable connections.Obtain the ability to read and work off blueprints, as well as interpret drawings, diagrams, and specifications of a variety of types of electrical equipment, including manufacturer’s manuals and parts books. * Obtain Journeyperson-level Electrician certification, preferably with an interprovincial seal or equivalent journeyman certification acceptable by the Corporation.Maintain a safe, clean and organised work environment and acts in a pro-active manner to make timely recommendations for continuous improvement of Corporation operations and equipment.Travel to remote locations to assist in maintaining and repairing power generating and distribution equipment. Travel will include small aircraft, boats, and helicopters.All other duties as required.Qualifications

  • High School Diploma (or equivalent GED) with a minimum passing grade (50% or higher) in each of the following courses (must provide school transcripts):
  • English 20-2 (or Literacy 30); and
  • Science 10; and
  • a minimum grade of 70% in Math 10C. Equivalencies may be considered.

  • Must have a valid NWT Class 5 driver’s license (or equivalent); a class 5P will not be accepted.
  • Some related electrical and/or construction experience would be an asset.
  • Employee is expected to obtain a Journeyperson-level Electrician certification, preferably with an interprovincial red seal.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both in written and verbal form.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Must be a team player.
  • Must be willing & able to travel to other locations throughout the NWT for periods of time (days/weeks).
  • Must be able to travel to/attend college for periods of time as part of the apprenticeship program.
  • Must provide satisfactory criminal background check.
  • Must provide at least two supervisor references.

This is an Apprentice position located in Fort Simpson, NT. Salary for this position starts at $28.44/hr. and increases as the apprenticeship progresses (as per Collective Agreement); in addition, there is a location allowance of approximately $6,184 per year.
