This position is covered by the Collective Agreement with the Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation District 35 – Technician/Administrative/Research/AgriculturalIf you are a current employee of the University of Guelph you must apply on the internal Career Page in order to be considered as an internal applicant.General PurposeReporting to the Foreman, Research Station Operations, the Agricultural Assistant Lead Hand is responsible for the day-to-day coordination of the Unit’s agricultural assistants’ activities and scheduling of tasks, and all aspects of the Unit’s operations.Duties and ResponsibilitiesAgricultural Assistants, including the Agricultural Assistant Lead Hand, are responsible for a complete range of farming operations (cultivation, planting, manure and fertilizer application, pesticide application, harvesting, lawn and station maintenance, machinery maintenance, etc); cooperating with research departments in the operation of their animal, plant, and environment research programs and crop scouting fields for various pests.Agricultural Assistants routinely operate over 80 different pieces of equipment, several of which utilize highly sophisticated, computerized systems, as well as various combinations of this equipment. They are expected to study the machine operation and fully understand each machine’s operational and safety characteristics.Incumbents are also responsible for all aspects of bunk management and feed storage: filling, covering, sealing and maintaining 27 bunkers.Additionally, incumbents provide instruction as well as on-going training and guidance to new staff with respect to work and safety practices, field work, and machine operation for optimal effectiveness.Other responsibilities include: cooperating with academic, industry and government research stakeholders in various research and demonstration trials; transporting equipment, materials and animals between research centres, including on occasion the Regional Campuses and their satellite stations, and providing emergency snow removal service.The incumbent is required to have a high level of knowledge and competence in all aspects of the Unit’s activities as well as a general knowledge of the operation of the livestock and crop research centres which RSO operations support.Requirements

  • Two (2) year Agriculture Diploma at a recognized advanced specialized training college
  • 2-3 years related farm experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Valid G driver’s licence (DZ license preferred)
  • Extensive knowledge of farm and equipment operations; the ability to operate farm equipment with experience in driving tractors with attached implements up to 400 HP; Computer literate, experience with human resource management, experience with on board GPS systems; demonstrated tact and diplomacy; knowledge of workplace health and safety standards and requirements. The job involves frequent lifting and a diverse range of motions in a wide-variety of activities. Overtime will be required, based on cropping conditions and weather.
