About the roleThe Accounting Manager, Finance Branch, oversees and supports the day-to-day activities of the Finance Accounting Function employees, including, but not limited to the following:

  • Payroll Officer(s)
  • Senior Accounts Payable Officers
  • Accounts Payable Officers
  • Financial Analyst
  • Supervisor, Accounting
  • Procurement Officer

The Accounting Manager plans, organizes, controls and reviews the processing and recording of all financial transactions of the Métis Nation of Ontario Secretariat, the Métis Nation of Ontario Cultural Commission and Métis Nation of Ontario Infinity Trust. The Accounting Manager also ensures that the work activities, key deliverables and special projects of the Branch are delivered on a timely basis and to the highest possible professional standard. This role requires both business and political acumen, the experience to manage people and change (processes, systems and policies) and the passion to work in a dynamic, fast-paced, multi-issue environment.What you will be doingProvides subject matter expertise accounting practices and day to day activities as follows:

  • Oversees administration of payroll, procurement and payables activities
  • Coordinate banking and cash-flow monitoring
  • Provides subject matter expertise to other Branches on financial policies, procedures, processes and best practices
  • Advises on complex accounting transactions according to Generally Accepted Accounting Principles
  • Ensures new processes and technology are implemented / leveraged to support effective Branch operations
  • Reviews accounting system balances and reconciliations
  • Ensures all statutory reporting requirements are met
  • Processing of investments into GIC and MNO Investment Fund and ensuring documentation adheres to policies.
  • Manage the year end external audit by coordinating the preparation of working papers and provision of materials to external auditors
  • Other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • CPA designation or equivalent
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain effective relationships with key stakeholders
  • Demonstrated ability to initiate and model positive change, and hold self and others accountable for achieving it
  • Demonstrated ability to balance completion of own work with that of the team
  • Demonstrated ability to motivate a team to accomplish objectives
  • Demonstrated ability to solve conflicts and to manage challenging situations
  • Demonstrated ability to quickly acquire and expand knowledge and to be flexible in a demanding and dynamic environment
  • Strong focus on balancing an environment that values consultation and collaboration, with achieving results by delegating, setting expectations, and monitoring progress of direct reports
  • Sound analytical thinking, planning, prioritization, and execution skills
  • High degree of tact, diplomacy and discretion
  • A high degree of technology literacy and proficiency in standard office equipment
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a high degree of self awareness
  • Strong communication skills in English, spoken and written
  • 1-3 years of progressive experience in a financial environment
  • Experience and knowledge in dealing with accounting systems, internal controls, business planning and asset management
  • Experience coaching, mentoring and developing employees, and building high performance teams
  • A clear and solid understanding of the issues faced by the Métis Nation of Ontario and Métis and Indigenous People in Ontario
