Please direct any accommodation requests to our recruitment team.Primary functionThe Multi-Language Services (MLS) department brings together LAO’s multi-language and French Language Services (FLS) programs. MLS provides centralized expertise, oversight and support, planning, compliance and reporting for language access to LAO services and communications, so as to meet LAO’s language commitments and obligations.The Language Programs Advisor position is responsible for integrating FLS and multi-languages into organizational initiatives, so as to ensure multi-language and FLS accessibility to LAO’s services that meets the needs of clients.
The role also includes external stakeholder relations, and leading special projects to support the achievement of the departmental mandate. The successful candidate will work with the Director, the MLS team and other internal partners to plan, develop and implement language accessibility initiatives for LAO.
The ideal candidate for this role is a resourceful self-starter who is highly organized and results-orientated with strong French language skills.Home Location: Provincial Office – Toronto

Reporting to: Director, Multiple Language ServicesKey accountabilities

  • Lead special projects for language accessibility, including the management of internal and external partnerships, consultations, studies and surveys.
  • Support the development, management and delivery of departmental language access initiatives and plans, including of awareness and training programs, tools and guides for language accessibility.
  • Provide advice and support to internal partners regarding integration of LAO’s FLS obligations and multi-language access to LAO’s services.
  • Lead policy development for FLS compliance and language access standards to LAO services.
  • Develop and review briefing notes relating to language access initiatives on behalf of the Director.
  • Support productive relationships with external stakeholders, including FLS stakeholders within the justice sector and organizations providing multi-language services, and multi-language stakeholders.
  • Support and contribute to reporting to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Promote and demonstrate a commitment to diversity, accessibility, equity and inclusion.

Required skills & experience

  • Strong written and oral proficiency in French
  • Strong written and oral proficiency in English
  • Undergraduate degree in a relevant field and/or minimum 4 years combined experience and education
  • Understanding of Legal Aid Ontario business and operations
  • Strong sense of client focused service
  • Ability to build and maintain positive relationships with internal and external stakeholders
  • Strong collaboration, consultation, facilitation, communication and interpersonal skills
  • Experience developing policy and guidelines
  • Strong organizational skills, adaptability and flexibility
  • Ability to manage multiple responsibilities concurrently
  • Professional, positive and supportive team player
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Ability to handle highly sensitive and confidential information
