Salary is competitive, negotiable, and commensurate with experience, and is subject to final budgetary approval.The University of British Columbia’s (UBC) Faculty of Land and Food Systems ( ) invites applications for a full-time tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor in Animal Welfare to join other colleagues within the UBC Animal Welfare Program. Applicants must have a PhD in a relevant discipline such as veterinary medicine, animal science, psychology, animal welfare science, anthropology, sociology, or human-animal interactions. The position expects teaching and mentoring of MSc and PhD students.The anticipated start date is July 1, 2025.A successful candidate will develop an internationally recognized research program that 1) addresses practical questions where research can lead to tangible improvements in the lives of animals impacted or cared for by humans, 2) advances theoretical and methodological issues important to the interdisciplinary field of Animal Welfare, and where appropriate, 3) integrates across relevant and feasible research areas and disciplines.Additionally, the candidate will be expected to benefit from existing university facilities and community resources and linkages, demonstrate excellence in teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, display a passion for mentoring graduate students, and show experience and interest in leadership within the field of animal welfare science. This includes guiding and leading collaborative research projects, mentoring students and junior researchers, actively engaging in scientific discussions and conferences, and holding leadership roles in academic and professional settings. Within the program and university, leadership is demonstrated by spearheading initiatives to enhance the program’s development, participating in faculty committees, and fostering connections with the broader community to advance the field. The successful candidate will be expected to collaborate with industry partners, government agencies, and/or other key stakeholders to facilitate the translation of research findings into practical, actionable outcomes.The committee will prefer candidates with postdoctoral or equivalent experience, a strong record of peer reviewed research in animal welfare relative to the timing of degree completion, and a demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion.The UBC Animal Welfare Program ( ) is one of the largest and most respected programs in the world in the field of animal welfare science. Since its inception in 1997, the program’s research has led to improvements in the lives of animals in British Columbia and around the world. The mission of the program is to improve the welfare and humane care of animals through active efforts in research, education and public outreach.
