  • Registered Nurse with current practicing registration with the BC College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM).
  • Baccalaureate in Nursing or Psychiatric Nursing is required.
  • Qualifications required for a staff nurse in the clinical area.
  • Five (5) years of recent, related experience in clinical areas.
  • Three (3) years of recent experience in a supervisory capacity, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

.Your Day to Day

  • Assumes overall responsibility for the delivery of resident care within the unit by supervising staff, coordinating or delegating resident assignments and developing rotations/schedules. Monitors unit activities, reviews resident outcomes, recommends improvements and changes to relevant standards/practices to ensure the unit is functioning at optimal levels of quality, safety and efficiency and in line with established organizational targets.
  • Monitors and evaluates staff work performance, sets performance goals/objectives, and defines areas for improvement. Completes performance reviews and plans for assigned staff members, and takes corrective action as necessary. Conducts initial meeting with staff member as part of the PHC Attendance and Wellness Promotion program. Works with Operations Manager and/or Nurse Educator to ensure staff performance and/or attendance improvement plans are implemented, objectives met, and follows up to determine effectiveness.
  • Manages employee relations’ issues including assuming responsibility for up to step two of the grievance procedure. Works with Operations Manager or Human Resources toward resolution of issues.
  • Coordinates requests for vacation days, annual vacation planning, special education and other leaves of absence; approves overtime, reviews staffing levels to determine operational requirements. Communicates scheduling changes to others, prepares documentation and forwards for review and approval. Ensures timekeeping records for staff are maintained/processed.
  • In applicable settings, ensures referral, intake, and wait time information is tracked and maintained and provides a forum for staff communication and problem solving through staff meetings. Ensures necessary resources are available or accessible, and delivers related training and orientation requirements.
  • Develops, reviews, revises and provides input into policies and procedures and related work practices to ensure clinical and organizational standards regarding safety, security, confidentiality and clinical care are adhered to. Assumes accountability for ensuring organizational policies and procedures are followed, and changing working practices where required.
  • Provides ongoing clinical supervision, leads unit case reviews, supports care planning and coordinates educational needs. Evaluates effectiveness of therapeutic interventions and communicates changes in the condition of the resident. Acts as a clinical resource for members of the multidisciplinary team and promotes collaboration for treatment concerns, continuity of care, and resource coordination.
  • Identifies staff educational needs in collaboration with the Nurse Educator and Operations Manager to ensure current and competent skill level and staff knowledge. Directs the development of plans for staff education programs, ensures educational plans are implemented by working with Nurse Educator to plan delivery at the staff level, coordinating delivery as required with other organizational stakeholders, and verifying that identified staff learning goals have been met. Presents in-service education services for staff as required.
  • Recruits, interviews, and hires applicants for positions within the unit. Prepares recommendations for final approval by Operations Manager regarding staffing plans both current and future state.
  • Leads on-going program planning, development, evaluation and quality improvement activities that facilitate program goal setting, problem solving, conflict resolution and collaboration. Identifies emerging clinical, operational, and systems issues and is accountable for improving service quality and utilization. Provides reports to the Operations Manager and other relevant stakeholders on various activities of the unit.
  • Monitors, implements and administers budget for staff resources, supplies and equipment establishes and maintains fiscally responsible system for ordering of supplies and equipment. Allocates resources/equipment within available budget.
  • Coordinates overall resident care by facilitating the development and implementation of treatment plans, initiates and participates in case conferences, conducts comprehensive nursing, and provides therapeutic services. Collaborates with others on issues and concerns regarding services and coordination.
  • Assists staff with clinical interventions, therapies and problem solving; provides clinical guidance and information on complex cases, discusses resident care issues, and develops partnerships with other facilities, agencies, and community resources. Monitors and assesses resident’s mental and physical state, response to medications and efficacy of treatment plan.
  • Ensures incident reports are completed and monitors reports to establish patterns and develop further quality and safety improvement initiatives.
  • Provides leadership in program quality initiatives by attending committees and ensuring implementation of initiatives; consults with staff regarding current and revised policies and procedures.
  • Analyzes resident demographic and clinical information using a population health focus, synthesizes information to recommend and develop initiatives aimed at health improvement. Monitors and measures health improvement initiatives and reports outcomes.
  • Participates in regional and PHC committees, task groups, and/or community initiatives; provides Program representation and input from a clinical perspective, presents relevant material, acts as advocate for the goals and objectives of the service(s), and promotes optimal support for clients and their families to improve access, integration and coordination of Program services.
  • Maintains statistical records and reports on various activities for the program.
  • Maintains an awareness of current trends and issues through literature review, contact with peers at other organizations, attendance at seminars, workshops, and educational programs.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
