· Paid recertification and training.What qualifications are we looking for?At YMCA Calgary we strive to ensure our employees are a fit based on their strengths, interests, and future goals.The successful candidates will have the following;· National Lifeguard – Pool certification;
· Current Standard First Aid with CPR-C certificated within the last 12 months from an approved AB OHS provider. Asset if certification is issued by one of the following five Canadian organizations: Canadian Red Cross, Heart and Stroke Foundation, Lifesaving Society, St John’s Ambulance and/or Canadian Ski Patrol.
· YMCA Swim Instructor, Red Cross Water Safety Instructor, or Swim for Life Instructor certification;
· Lifesaving Instructor would be considered an asset;
· Should be able to work morning shifts;
· Evidence of a clear Police Information Check including a Vulnerable Sector Search;
· Three professional references.What does this role look like at YMCA Calgary?Lifeguards and Swim Instructors will:
· Ensure a safe aquatic environment by following National Lifeguard standards and/or YMCA Policies and Procedures;
· Demonstrate exceptional customer service;
· Are knowledgeable of YMCA programs and services;
· Complete administrative tasks, update class rosters, lesson plans, check equipment, clean equipment, perform light maintenance tasks when not guarding or instructing;
· Perform all scheduled water tests;
· Keep pool area clean and organized;
· Respond to emergencies according to National Lifeguard standards and/or YMCA Policies and Procedures;
· Work as a team, communicate effectively with staff, volunteers and members in all situations;
· Attend all scheduled in-services;
· Attend all necessary YMCA training.The Lifeguard and swim instructor will work within the Health, Fitness, and Aquatics (HFA) branch working in the pool area. The Life guard and swim instructor is responsible for both Lifeguarding and Instructor coverage on a regular basis.As a Lifeguard, they must be alert at all times in order to prevent and respond to emergencies. All aquatics staff may work in the presence of chemicals in order to maintain a clean and healthy aquatic environment.By design the Aquatics Lifeguard and Instructor position can be a physically taxing position requiring extended periods of walking, standing, and scanning the facility and pool areas. The Lifeguard and swim Instructors are also required to work in close contact with others while providing first aid and CPR when required.
