- Recommend income tax strategies that result in minimization of taxes and
support the implementation and maintenance of designed processes relating to
income tax strategies (and documentation of the same) * Be aware of and understand corporate activities that may affect income taxaccounting, planning or compliance (e.g. by building and maintaining internal
relationships to keep abreast of activities that will affect income tax planning, reporting and compliance). * Advise on tax implications of compensation strategies and employee benefit
- Participate in lobbying for changes to tax legislation and administrative practices.
- Provide income, payroll and miscellaneous tax advice to senior management and
other business units. * Participate in /take a leadership role in special projects, including M&A,restructurings and reorganizations * Review legal agreements from a tax perspective.Tax Compliance and Tax Reporting:
- Ensure compliance with all income tax laws, regulations and filings
o Interpret and monitor income tax, transfer tax, taxable benefits/ payroll tax
legislation and relevant case law. * Participate in preparation & review of tax returns.
- Participate in preparation & review of monthly, quarterly & year-end tax reporting, including MD&A and notes to the F/S.
- Ensure the financial statement tax balances, tax forecasts, and regulatory tax
filings are accurate and adequately supported for audit purposes * Prepare tax ruling and technical interpretation requests.
- Oversee compliance with withholding tax obligations on payments to nonresidents
- Review, update and improve compliance promoting processes.
- Develop and update of corporate tax policies and review /create processes that
promote the monitoring of their application.Required qualifications:
- University degree with CPA designation.
- Minimum of 10 years of tax experience in a large corporate environment or
equivalent public practice experience (public accounting or legal firm). * Strong tax accounting knowledge and experience – US GAAP, IFRS, C-GAAP.
- Extensive knowledge of, and experience with, ASC-740 (aka FIN48)
- Advanced excel skills including use of v-lookup and pivot tables
- Effective communication skills required to interact effectively with internal and
external contacts on income tax and accounting matters. * Extensive knowledge of and experience in analyzing Canadian federal and provincialincome tax legislation; judicial decisions; administrative practices and industry
practice. * Extensive experience with tax compliance and tax planning
- Ability to work independently
- Demonstrated leadership skills
- Demonstrated collaborative skills.
Preferred qualifications:
- Experience with restructuring /reorganization transactions
- Experience with payroll tax /taxable benefits legislation and related guidance
- Experience with pension plans and infrastructure investments
- Experience with M&A transactions and tax due diligences
- Experience with SR&ED claims and knowledge of SR&ED legislation
- Experience with regulated industry
- Experience with outbound tax issues
- Experience with managing audits by external auditors and tax authorities
- Experience in a public company environment
- Knowledge of, and experience with, using SAP
- Knowledge of, and experience with partnerships and trusts
- Experience with Executive Compensation matters
- Support special projects
- Assist with income tax audits and development of related strategies.
- Develop and maintain relationships within the external tax community as well as
