The ministry supports Albertans’ health and well-being throughout their lives by protecting public health and promoting wellness; coordinating and delivering safe, person-centered, quality health services; planning capital infrastructure; supporting innovative information management and technologies; regulating health care; and funding the health system.The Department of Health establishes the Government of Alberta’s strategic direction for health, including advising government on health policy, legislation and standards, and public health concerns; monitoring and reporting health system performance; setting policies and priorities for the electronic/digital health environment; and providing oversight and ensuring accountability across the health system.For further information on Alberta Health, visit the ministry website at .Role ResponsibilitiesThe Indigenous Health Division – Indigenous Health Policy and Planning Branch has an opening for a Senior Indigenous MAPS Specialist.The Senior Indigenous MAPS Specialist reports directly to the Executive Director and as the subject matter expert providers leadership, strategic advice, and knowledge/skill transfer to the Branch, as well as internal ministry/Alberta government, and external teams regarding all work of the Branch, particularly impacting Indigenous peoples’ health, and the Indigenous MAPS initiative. This includes designing, planning, managing and evaluating major projects related to Indigenous MAPS, as well as supporting cross-Branch, cross-Divisional, as well as cross-Ministry priorities and initiatives.The Senior Indigenous MAPS Specialist must possess expert level knowledge and understanding of the historical and contemporary experiences of Indigenous Peoples; the impact colonization has and continues to have on Indigenous Peoples and communities; and the cultures; protocols, socio-economic conditions of Indigenous Peoples; political and administrative structures; relevant federal, provincial, and Indigenous legal frameworks and policies; etc.The Senior Indigenous MAPS Specialist will be responsible for:

  • Developing and supporting strategic projects and initiatives associated with the Indigenous MAPS initiative at the broader system level, focused on addressing and improving health outcomes for Indigenous peoples.
  • Conducting analysis to identify and develop proposals, discussion papers, briefing notes, and provide strategic advice to address trends, issues, and challenges impacting Indigenous peoples access to primary health care services.
  • Supporting larger policy development teams, including collaboration and coordination responsibilities, such as chairing cross-ministry committees and call ad hoc meetings as required with cross-Divisional and cross-Ministry matters related to improving access to Indigenous primary health care; and
  • Undertaking project management responsibilities and lead implementation on complex and multi-stakeholder projects.

  • Minimum of six (6) years (10 years with no formal education) of progressively responsible experience (includes experience with human resources management, budget, and forecasting, reporting up to senior leadership)
  • Minimum of 5 years working with Indigenous peoples.

In addition to the above requirements to be considered for the Senior Indigenous MAPS Specialist position you must have experience with:

  • Strategic planning, policy development and/or working through the legislative process (preference will be given to those who have experience with working through the legislative process).
  • Applying federal and provincial legislation and policies impacting Indigenous peoples.
  • Understanding of jurisdictional issues in Indigenous health.
  • In depth knowledge of health system priorities, primary care delivery, and issues within the political, economic, and global environment.

For this position the following will be considered assets:

  • Indigenous cultural knowledge.
  • Experience working in a First Nation, Métis, or Inuit community organization or similar environment.
  • Experience working within legislation that governs Indigenous health.
